"Domestic" is a term of art in hospitality. Next time you are at a restaurant offering deals on "domestic" beers, try to order an Abita and see what they say

Or better yet see if they list it as domestics when offering specials.

The bartender should have used a better description though. No Big 3 or their variations, but people would argue that.

My 2 cents [ I've been to Pelican House three separate times]:

I waited for this bar to open all throughout April and was a little disappointed on how poorly they used social media in the beginning. The first time my SO and I visited PH was late one friday night, which was a huge mistake on our parts because we had no idea that PH was supposed to be direct competition w/ Bulldog. In the end we didn't stay at PH long that night.

On our second visit, we went on a Saturday evening. Everything at the bar was much more chill and the bartenders were welcoming imo. The only negative that we both agreed on is that PH should have done a better job on the design of the menu's they offered customers. It basically looked like management printed out all of the beers, liquor & food on a spreadsheet. Then stapled it together and called it a day.

The last time I visited PH was during the week before LSU's graduation. Management looked like they were already working on the outdoor patio area [which is a huge positive imo]. Management also explained to my SO's parents that they hand hired members from both Bulldog & The Cove.....

I have mix feelings about PH at the moment. It great that management is trying to keep the beers as refresh as possible and have a lively atmosphere. But, i tend to agree with some of the posters who said that the food was a bit "blah" and that it came out slowly.

We went late thinking that it would be more of a dining experience. Especially when looking at some of the items they had at first on their website [Recently they have removed the photos].

One of the managers told my SO's dad that they had "plucked" one bartender away from Bulldog & another from The Cove. I was skeptical at the time. But, didn't say anything outloud.

Oh, I know "domestic" is a theoretical term .. Abita's listed as an import everywhere you go .. It was just funny with the PBR tap sitting right behind her ..

I think the place has potential. But they need to fix the little things imo...

Need to fix little things...like a new bar manager and teaching waitresses anything about the beers

It was terrible when I tried to orderbeers by name and waitress was clueless

I will say that having to point to the menu 75% of the time I order beer has been disconcerting.

I stumbled in there the other day on a whim and I was the only person in the joint. I had ample time to talk up the bartender and the general manager. I, for one, found the bartender to be pretty knowledgeable and she was able to accurately judge how I'd feel about a couple of different beers based upon the few beers I gave her as preferences. Maybe I just got lucky.

And my understanding from her and the GM, it's more meant to compete with The Cove than The Bulldog. Apparently someone got forced out at The Cove and that's where PH came from? Something like that. They spoke vaguely, and while I could have pressed for more details as I am an acquaintance with the GM, I felt like that was probably rude and let it go.

I guess because its right next door but The Cove and PH are two completely different bars with different clientele. About the only thing they have in common is a large variety of beer and alcohol. If PH is competing with anyone, its the Bulldog.

I wouldnt say anyone got forced out. Its not like the PH owners had any ownership in The Cove. To my knowledge, they left because the owner of The Cove is an a-hole(he is) and they wanted a bar of their own.

i had the burger. it was good but $11 for just a burger and no fries seems high to me.

No doubt the food is overpriced.

Also, I paid $10 for a pint of Stone Russian Imperial Stout.. some of their stuff seems a little too steep. I like the place but I also agree that it hasn't hit its potential yet.

I ordered the fried alligator for $10 and when I got it I couldn't help but laugh at the plate. It was literally a handful of alligator on this little 4" plate. I should have taken a picture.

Like I said, the staff definitely needs more training. But there isn't a plethora of beer nerds working industry jobs in BR and no training the world will force someone who isn't interested in craft beer to become interested. They should learn as much as they can, but it was a process for me to even learn the small amount i know.. and i actually enjoy/drink it. Those waitresses probably don't even drink beer so all they can tell you is what they're told/trained. I can see where it would be hard for something you don't drink to stick without you being around it for a long time.

They maybe should have had a "training course".. Maybe even a cheat book lol.
If they at least know a little, they'll know more than the average customer.
