A look at the 2013 U.S. Open Course for next week

115th U.S. Open
June 13-16, 2013
Merion Golf Course
Ardmore, Pennsylvania
A thin, sharply sloped fairway welcomes golfers to the par-4 16th hole
The course is considered short for a U.S. Open, but they have made it long where it hurts- the Par 3s and 5s. While the Par 4s are reasonable, three of the Par 3s are approximately 250+ yards with water and hazards lurking everywhere and the two Par 5s average 592 yards apiece.
The track is a 7,000 yard, Par 70 layout with insane rough that does not graduate. Golfers will go from fairway to a thick, wet, ball-swallowing turf in the span of a few inches. To complicate matters further, the greens are not only wicked fast but much smaller than Augusta's. Merion places a premium on accuracy and ball striking instead of length and driver is only necessary on two or three holes.
Experts are torn on how Merion will play this year. Many feel that with increased recent rain showers and the lack of wind in the Philadelphia area the course will yield near-record low scores for a major.
However, others feel that the massive Par 3s, tiny greens, denser rough and recently narrowed fairways will force enough bogeys to keep the winning score between 3-7 under par. A good write up on this topic can be read here.

That looks miserable to a below average golfer like myself

damn...what would a 10-12 'capper shoot there...??
110+...??
110+...??

where are the spectators going to stand?

For the most part, they aren't...they'll be in massive grandstands.
Winged Foot rough was thicker, though.

Honestly, I bet it would be worse. I'm a 15 handicap and I probably would shoot in the 120s. Think about it this way- it's short for a US Open, but look at the length of some of these holes:
Hole 3, Par 3: 256 Yards
Hole 4, Par 5: 628 Yards
Hole 5, Par 4: 504 Yards
Hole 6, Par 4: 487 Yards
Hole 18, Par 4: 521 Yards
The average weekend 10-15 handicap golfer is probably averaging about a 260 yard drive (regardless of what he tells other people). Assuming said golfer hits that tiny strip of a fairway, he's still looking at a 240 yard approach shot on many of those par 3s and longer par 4s.
But where the course would eat us alive is on the greens. Most of us cannot comprehend how difficult it would be to putt on a US Open green with that much speed and break. It would be like putting on linoleum. We would be three and four putting from 20 feet on the reg.
So yeah, where I'm normally ok with an 86-88, I'd be happy to get out of Merion with a 120.

I don't think that fairway is narrow enough. Shrink it more

WGT.com has a Merion available for online play and a Virtual US Open. That course is eating me up. If it's going to be like that in person, it should be a hell of a weekend.

Eh, they did that for effect. It's wider in the landing area for your drive. that is a view of the area you'd layup for your 3rd shot.

that would give me nightmares

What would get the average golfer more than the greens would be the rough. Most people have no clue how thick that stuff is.

I think this is the last time it's ever at Merion.
That being said, Stricker gets his major this week. Which could never happen to a nicer guy

Especially with the "public golf" trend of the USGA.

It's just too short for modern golf. I would not be surprised if 10 under won this week.

Depends on conditions

I may have to eat some crow gumbo.
I didn't realize it's been 30+ years since they last played a Open there. David Graham won it at -7.
I'm sure -7 had deceased USGA execs spinning in their graves and the USGA white shirts on site going into cardiac arrest.
Will be interesting to see how they set the course up.
