shuttle runs are more important than 40's
there is so much starting, cutting and stopping in a football game

Defensive backs would be my guess.

I would guess DB, because if they get beat that top end speed can get them back into the play. WR would be next

I asked myself, what position routinely has to run in a straight line for a decent distance?

The answer to that question is safety.

But it seems that the forty isn't considered to be as important for safety as I would suspect. For instance, the 40 times for the LB's and safeties in this year's combine are very similar.

this - speed is paramount everywhere else.

If I had to pick from most important to least:

1. CB
2. S
3. WR
4. TE
5. LB
6. DE
7. DT
7. QB
8. OT
9. OG

Safety and WR would be #1. Cornerbacks need good hips more than top end speed.
