I pretty much am a Maker's and coke kinda guy but would like to try to start drinking it on the rocks/ with water/or neat. What would be your suggestions on doing this? Buying something nicer than makers (if so, what?) or just adding a splash of coke to my bourbon until I don't need/care for it anymore?

I went from splash of coke, to water, to rocks, to neat.

once you get to the water portion, you have no desire to ever ruin your bourbon with coke again.

Maker's is easy to do it with if that's what you have

Have you not had your coffee yet this morning? This isn't all that complicated Neaux.

1) fill glass with ice
2) add bourbon of choice
3) watch chest hair grow

check out the long-arse bourbon thread for suggestions.

I don't want any more of #3. Can I pass on that?

your prerogative.

but first and foremost please ruining bourbon by adding fricking Coke to it. Maker's on the rocks is a good start .. just force yourself to order it our pour it and then finish it. after a week or so you'll never want a mixer again. then you can expand into other bourbons/scotches neat or on the rocks. just have to get over the initial hump of not tasting that sweetness along with the bourbon. will shock your palate at first but once you get used to it you will start picking up nuances of the liquor and enjoy it.

I used club soda as a gateway into drinking whiskey with water and on the rocks. It eliminates the sweetness that you're accustomed to with coke but also takes out "the burn" of the whiskey at first. Once you get used to that then move onto water and/or on the rocks.

Right. Try Fresca. It's great with some Beam by the pool.

I dropped sweeteners all at once. No sugar or cream in coffee, all tea unsweetened (I hate that word), no sugary mixer in bourbon. I love sweets, I just don't add them to drinks anymore.

I still enjoy a bourbon and club soda. If drinking it neat is what you want to do, that's fine, but a little water does cause a chemical reaction that releases different flavors in the bourbon.

Never been a huge fan of makers mark. Try 4 roses, you will thank me

I don't like bourbon on the rocks. I drink it neat or with a few drops of water for the high proof stuff. Four Roses Small Batch is a good easy sipping whiskey to start with.

Get you a high quality bourbon. And a Mason jar. Cram the mason jar full of ice and fill with high quality bourbon. Let sit for 3-4 minutes. Sip and enjoy.

Is that the one that is kinda of spicy? If so, I wasn't a big fan.

Makers is fine for someone starting out. The guy is trying to graduate to drinking bourbon the proper way so any subtlties will be lost on him right now. Another good bourbon for the money is Wellers 12.
