A discussion of pass defense tackles by LBs and DBs

quote:

Here is a list of the top defenders in pass tackles, along with how many stops they had and their pass-tackle stop rate. The league average was 33 percent for linebackers, 23 percent for cornerbacks, and 19 percent for safeties.

The list is by total pass tackles.

Lofton had 46 pass tackles with a 28% stop rate.

Harper had 57 pass tackles with an 18% stop rate.

When we look at it by stop rate, none of out LBs are among the top OR the bottom of the league.

However, we have two safeties in the bottom of the stop rate list: IAQ (8%) and Jenkins (9%). The overwhelming majority of entries to the bottom group for stop rate are free safeties, which is expected due to the position.

A "stop" is defined as a tackle made where the offensive player fails to make the average yardage on a play based on down, distance, and field position. This is why linebackers have, on average, a higher stop rate than corners, who have a higher rate than safeties.

The last part of the article touches on players who have the most tackles on players they were covering, meaning that they allowed their man to make a catch most often...

The much maligned P-Rob checks in at #19, with 27 tackles for an average of 16 yards. FWIW, #18 was Dunta Robinson (28, 15.1) and #20 was Tim Jennings (27, 13.2). This list was rather interesting. DeAngelo Hall checked in at #10 with 29 tackles for an average of 17.1 yards, for example. And both Bears starters were on it, as were a number of other corners who were asked to play in a zone scheme. New Saint Keenan Lewis was #8 with 30 for 11.4, for example.

I'll leave the article to you guys to draw your own conclusions. I have some other observations that I'll share during discussion.

What i take from this is that we have (had) a statistically significant deficiency at the safety position and acted on it by drafting the highest rated, most versatile safety available. More proof that while Vaccaro was not the sexy pick, he was the right one.

I agree with that assessment, but I also want to see the coverage stats next week.

I also think that scheme was an issue in our secondary last season, so we should see some improvement there.

As many have said, the Vaccaro pick allows us to be much more versatile in the back of our defense. I know some people wanted Jones because they were enamored with his sack totals at UGA, but that doesn't always transfer to the NFL (kind of like RBs and their yardage). While many members of our front seven didn't put up sexy stats, the transition to a 3-4 will help get some of them on the field and in a position to begin doing so. Again, scheme was an issue.

What's sad is that many of our fans don't want to look at the big picture.

Sounds a lot like what I've been saying. From the switch to 3-4 to the hiring of Ryan to the drafting of Vaccaro, these are possibly the best moves we could have made based on our personnel.

Now we just have to hope it translates to the field.

Post those coverage stats when you see them next week. I'm curious to see how (badly) we stack up. However they come out though, I'm convinced Vaccaro was the right call. I'll admit that Jones was my hope at the time, but that was the fan boy cheerleader in me and not the true fan of the game. But as the dust settled, i have grown more and more excited about the opportunities he's brought to the table.

Hell, he's already paid for himself three times over. Drafting him alone gave us the leverage we needed to restructure Harper and save millions.

Hell of a post. Completely agree. Many of us loved the idea of Jones, but it shows how much we knew. The Vaccaro pick has grown on me substantially over time, it as the biggest need. Jones may end up being a badass, he may also end up being an injury prone bust, but the staff made the right call here.

I've been trying to get folks to realize that decisions should be judged on the basis of the available information at the time of the decision, not on the outcome of that decision.

Glad to see that someone else sees this draft pick that way.

I didn't like the pick at first, but it addressed our biggest weakness last year (and the past couple of years really).
