I'm applying for a job that better relates to my previous role I left 8 months ago. I have 5 years experience there.

Can I put that job first? Or do you think it'll look like I've been unemployed for the last 8 months?

It would look like you are unemployed.... what if you just included those 2 jobs as if you were simply listing them as if oldest was first....leaving anything off whatever you did before 5 years ago...that's probably what I'd do...

I have seen this before and think you should still go chronological.

Stick to one page if at all possible. Therefore the most recent job may just have the job title, company, and duration.

Use your page space on the prior jobs that most relate to the one you are applying for. Put key details on your impact and numbers if possible.

Motivational fit will be a big question mark. Be ready to discuss why you left this role previously but are not wishy-washy anymore. It can actually be pretty effective if you discuss that the recent job seemed like a great move at the time. However, being away for 8 months made you miss the work and really cemented that it is what you want to do for the long haul.

Leave it in chronological order, be brief on the current job description and then spend the rest of the resume talking about that previous job.

If recruiters didn't toss résumés with older dates at the top in the trash then doing it that way wouldn't be an issue.

Thanks! Hindsight is quite impressive. Made the dumbest decision of my career so far and now I'm trying to fix it...
