So I am thinking about building an Xbox 360 Laptop

Why? Because I am bored and I think I can do it. Plus I just so happen to have everything I need.
I have a spare Xbox slim, an old laptop I will rob parts off of (I need to order a $30 LCD controller board for the screen though), and all the tools, resin, plastic, etc.
I got a wild creative hair up my arse and have already made one part of the reverse mold for my base piece. I need to make the top that way I can inject the resin in between them to make the base.
If I had access to a C&C machine or 3D printer that would be ideal but I don't so I have to make the base with polyester casting resin.
I plan on using the hinges and the whole top half off of the laptop for my screen part. I plan on filling in some of the body lines and the dell logo with bodyshop putty to clean it up.
I have a basic idea of how to fit it all in there after taking the Xbox apart already. If there was a better way to cool the CPU I could make it pretty slim but there isn't that I know of so it will probably be 3" or 4" think with the lid closed. I did see one guy did a reverse pressure deal that allowed enough air to flow over the CPU but I am not sure how he did it and I don't want to take that chance.
Obviously this will take some time to complete but I am no electronic guru. I fully expect to fry this Xbox out before it's all said and done.
If I don't get frustrated and quit I will post my progress and some pics in this thread.
This is what I am shooting for
This is what I will probably end up with

When does Breaking Bad start?

This seems interesting. If I had an extra console lying around I'd attempt it too. But alas, I will live vicariously through you.

If this works I plan on hacking up my PS too though it's an old 40GB fat. I may need to trade it for a slim.

I don't think I'd buy a new console to hack up. Just do it to the old 40. You don't use it much anyway.

The fat 40s sale for $160-$200 used on Amazon still for some reason. I would just be trading it straight up pretty much.
That's getting way ahead anyway. I made the mold this morning and while I am taking a break I am trying to figure some things out by taking apart this laptop. The whole project will take me a while.
I also need to find some speakers and figure out how to get them in the case and functioning with the Xbox. I think I can use some PC speakers and use a audio jack I have but powering them is where I am stuck. I don't want to have 3 plugs (XBox, monitor, and speakers) on this thing.

You going to update with pictures throughout the process, I am kinda curious

Yea I will. I will take some pics if I finish the mold tomorrow and take some more hopefully Tuesday when I actually pout the mold. I have to go to Hobby Lobby Tuesday morning and get the resin and dye for it. I plan on painting it all but I am still going to dye the resin black in case the paint scratches that way it won't be as noticeable.

Another project which may be interesting is a MAME arcade.
I may do that when I have the room to store and the tools necessary

I have seen people building those and have thought about it. I have a spare 20" monitor I can use if I do it. They look pretty simple and I have all of the laminate tools to do all of the finish work with black Formica or something.

adding speakers is less cumbersome than a headphone jack? or do you just want to have speakers no matter what?

I want to have built in speakers. I am saying I could use a cable like this
and instead of soldering it I could use something like this
since most small PC speakers have one male end.
I am going to take the PC speakers out of the case they come in and put them in the base of my system.
Just trying to figure out how to power them. I am thinking about buying some USB powered ones and maybe jumping them off of a USB port on the Xbox but then I would have to close that port off from being used so it doesn't overload it if someone pluged something into it.

So you're basically one upping the one? (Cheesy pun intended)
Ftr idgaf about anything on the new consoles. Ill wait till they release, hear reviews, try them out, then build a PC

I'm going to do this within the year. Found some good deals on two cabinets on CL.

Why wouldn't you just build a cabinet out of press wood?

I'm sure it wouldn't be as good of quality as an old Soul Caliber cab.

That's part of the fun. Learning as you go.

So After fooling with this a little more I think I changed my mind on what to do.
I was originally going to spread out the components and try to make it as thin as possible. The problem is I am limited to 16 inches in width giver or take because I am using a 15.4" screen. I would also have to figure out a way to keep the radiator on top of the CPU cool because the fan that is right on top of it would need to come off in order to thin things out. I could use a laptop fan for this and I have one but I am not sure it would be enough.
I am not thinking I leave the Xbox parts in the metal case they come in. It looks like this.
It's right at 2-1/8" tall and 9-3/4" wide. This would give me plenty of room to mount the LCD controller board, speakers, and the audio/video cables on the left of everything. I have to mount the Xbox to the far right so the fan can get air because of the way the intake is set up.
With the case thickness, the Xbox, and the screen on top I am looking at about 3-1/4" thick
I may change my mind again the more I fool with it but this is where I currently am.
The only way I can maybe change this is to figure out a good way to keep the radiator below this fan cool with some air flowing from the side instead of the top.
ETA: The other trick I have to figure out is how to remove the touch sensitive controls off of the front of the Xbox. It's a pretty thin ribbon cable and it's glued down to the front plastic piece and the buttons are riveted on with melted plastic.
