My wife had already ruined the ending for me.

Visually the movie looked good. The story and message were solid.

I probably won't watch again.

To me so far has a much better feel and direction than Argo and Silver Linings by far. Thoughts?

All three of those movies are nothing a like. Kind of hard to make a comparison.

Absolutely I didn't really make a good point. Guess I meant it seems better fit for a movie of the season than the other 2 nominee's I mentioned that's all I meant.

There are very few movies/tv shows that are just ruined for me because of complete lack of ability to empathize with the leading character, but this was one of them. The main character's naivete was just irritating.

I'm not exactly crocodile dundee, but I'm pretty fricking sure if I was starving and caught a fish, I would not start bawling my eyes out because I had to kill it. After that scene, I was rooting for him about as much as I would root for the cast of Girls.

I loved it.

Spoilers

I really liked the relationship between Pi and Richard Parker, and how at the end RP simply got out and wandered into the jungle instead of showing some sort of attachment to Pi. I wasn't too happy at first about the ambiguous ending of "did it happen or was it really an embellished story about him, his mother, the chef, etc." but the more I look back on it, the more I'm cool with that kind of ending.

And it was definitely gorgeous as frick.

How did she ruin the ending? Doesn't seem like a very easy movie to spoil really..

When he stuck his hand in the tiger's cage, I wanted it to get eaten off so badly.

SPOILERS

The story is a fantasy concocted to beautify the ugly truth of death, murder and betrayal.

I don't think it was ambigous at all. It clearly didn't happen, the fantasy is just a much better story.

but it was visually stunning

Saw it in 3D and it blew my mind. Perfect, air tight story and characters? Nah. But they were solid enough to play along with the visuals. Out of all the movies I saw in theatres last year, this one was probably 2nd only to Django and tied with Perks of Being a Wallflower for me (also saw Les Mis, Hobbit, This is 40, Bond, DKR, Avengers, etc.)

One of my favorite movies to watch with the kids. Visually appealing, great family story, and just fun to watch with my 8 year old daughter. Sometimes, the movie doesn't have to be spectacular to be enjoyable. I think Life of Pi fits that perfectly. My daughter loves it and after watching it 3 times with her - she asks different questions each time about life, religion, and family. She also will ask a lot of technology questions and "how'd they do that" about the making of the movie itself.

Anyway, it is a good experience to share with kids that have an open mind and don't necessarily want Transformers, Halo, and Call of Duty type movies all the time.

I thought it was great. Lots of room for discussion, which is always fun especially if your spouse or girlfriend/boyfriend enjoyed it too.

The visuals were incredible.

(Spoiler)

I did think the tiger was going to die some horrible death and make me sad. I was pleased to see him make it into the jungle ok.

Your post is a bit of SPOILERS... and my response is also SPOILERS --

Interesting take on being naive. I think perhaps you are a bit guilty of being naive as well. You are saying that the main character was naive for crying about the loss of life. However, I think maybe you are applying your value system to his life, instead of you recognizing his value system. His personal core beliefs is that the fish is just as important to the world as his own mother or father. Now, I'm now saying I agree with his value system, but I do recognize that many people in this world feel this way. He was crying because he felt like he betrayed and murdered a living being - which is just as sinful as murdering a human being.

So, where you say you wouldn't bawl your eyes out - that's probably because you don't value the fish on equal as a human being. Other societies and religions do. This movie plays much better if you can accept that difference in cultures exist and empathize with them, without needing to explain them.

The ending wasn't ambiguous.
