Don't get me wrong. I enjoy football. But football is exciting because people make it exciting. People make a big deal and in the end, life isn't lived in a vaccum. You enjoy life with friends, and football is just that medium for me. Long road trips. Tailgating. Drinking. Fantasy football. And, of course, talking and arguing with people about fooball (which explains why I watch at home by myself).

If you strip all that away and look at the action of the game itself and what it provides, football isn't all that great compared to other sports like hockey, basketball, soccer, or lacrosse. It just isn't.

The reason its the most popular is because

- its played once a week so its easy to keep up with
- fantasy football
- gambling
- nothing else to do on Sunday

These are your real reasons.

Particularly fantasy. Don't underestimate the impact of fantasy on drawing in new "fans".

Rams were in a couple in the early 00s

Bills were in 4 straight in the early 90s

Baseballs has teams like the Cubs that havent won in 100 years and teams like the Yankees that have won like 30 titles in the same span

Championships are a bad way to measure parity.

Variety.

In basketball, you're watching one player with the basketball. He's either going to take a jumpshot, pass it, or drive to the basket. The other guys on the court are just moving around trying to get open. One will set a pick.

In football, you're watching eleven guys who each have a crucial role in each play. The quarterback may hand it off to the running back who will then have a plethora of options. He may run left. Run right. Run outside. Cutback. Make a move. Elude tacklers. Power over tacklers. He may get plastered in the backfield. He may turn around and toss it back to the quarterback. He may step back and launch it deep.

The quarterback may also drop back and pass it. He may throw a screen where linemen have run out into the open field to block. He may throw it deep where the wide receiver may make an acrobatic catch. He may throw it short to a guy that can elude tacklers. He may throw it to a gigantic tight end.

Then on defense, you have even more things to watch. Basketball's defense is get in the way. Hopefully get a block or a steal or foul. Football features precise coverage skills, multiple reads, and hard tackles. Then you have the possibility of a quarterback sack.

I love basketball, and I love the NBA. But I enjoy the 1st quarter and then get bored until the 4th. It's so redundant.

A combination of Tailgating, Games mostly on the weekend, and a relatively small number of games in a season. It fits into America's social calendar much better than any other sport.

It's the absolute only sport going on in the fall in the US; baseball ends right before a lot of the huge games and basketball/hockey are over.

With college football getting bigger, that brings more and more fans to the game. Add in that you can tailgate at stadiums for hours/days and it's a pretty perfect storm of partying/live/excuses to be awesome

1. Looks really good on TV.

2. Still lots of white people who play.

I love football for the social aspect of watching the games with friends and family. You have tailgating or gathering at a house party. The stoppage in play allow for discussion and in depth analysis of plays. Plus fantasy football allows for the sofa warriors and competition between friends.

This is the same reason I like to go to baseball games. I've never really been to a major league soccer match, but watching on TV is enjoyable to me.

Disagree completely, nothing tops a huge play in football. A sack on a third down, a 50 yard bomb, a huge run for a first. Football is popular because it is incredible live. Its the only sport where the fans feel they have a hand in the action while yelling when their team is on defense. The fantasy and tailgating adds to the experience, but football is so popular because it is awesome live.

people like the fast paced, fast action style of play during the plays?

This is why I love hockey.

You say this, but I bet you wouldn't know what a big play in soccer looks like unless it involves a goal.

I've seen a higher number of exciting plays in a scoreless soccer draw than in some football games.

Are you serious? It means you wouldn't be able to pick out soccer's equivalent of a big third down sack because you have no idea what you're looking at. Therefore, you find soccer less exciting because the only thing in soccer you find exciting is a goal.
