It's a dumb rule considering the logic behind it, but it's a great rule with the drama it creates.
There's a good bit of great basketball moments that don't exist without this rule.

I like that it adds drama, but in pure fundamental terms it's without a doubt the dumbest rule of all-time.
Absolutely. It's a complete and utter mockery of the game of basketball done for sheer entertainment value rather than the integrity of the game.

Well the whole point of the game is sheer entertainment.

I never really thought that much about this rule and wouldn't have gave it much thought if it weren't for this thread. Looking at it though it is really a dumb rule. I was rooting for the pacers and I am not a LeBron fanboy so I am sure I will got a lot of u mad retarded responses but that has nothing to do with it because if this thread wouldn't have been here I wouldn't have given it any thought.
This rule however is the equivalent of in the nfl a team down 2 or 3 points on the 50 yard line with a few seconds left calling a time out and getting moved to the 30. Basically turning a hail mary into a field goal opportunity. if you step back and look at it logically it really makes no sense.

If the Heat lost, this thread would not exist.

It's impossible to try to make a direct comparison over different sports, but it's not like the NFL doesn't have rules in place that encourage comebacks.

Can't totally disagree...
However...NONE of the NFL rules freely give up territory or field position just because you have a timeout. It is the whole "territory" part that bothers me about the NBA rule.

Where did I tell you to change your opinion? Or even say its a good rule?
I see your strengths lie with reading comprehension.

At least the NBA has a timed overtime, unlike the very flawed NFL overtime.

the rule moves the offense closer to the basket turning what would be a half court hail mary shot into a possible layup. that would be equivalent to moving an nfl offense closer to the endzone turning a hail mary attempt into a shorter play or a field goal opportunity. pretty similar imho fwiw ps3

Well, gaining "territory" is one of the major goals on football, of course they won't have rules that give up yards, because gaining yards is one of the sports major objectives. That's not so much the case with the NBA.
It's 2 different sports so it's hard to gauge the impact of the different rules.
