Permits are not necessary. It's like flossing, recommended but not needed. No need to get one.

since the LA constitution was amended, this may be valid, but I don't want to play Guinea pig till the courts decide what it all means.

Ark just joined in along with a few other states that are constitutional carry. I really hope Louisiana does as well.

Because it gives you much more freedom when you cross state lines. For example, you're technically not supposed to have a loaded handgun accessible to the driver while driving in Alabama. Although this law is absurd, the fact that I have a CC permit makes this law null and void for me.

If you wish to carry without a permit, move to one of the constitutional carry states, which are Alaska, Montana, Vermont, Arizona, and most recently, Arkansas.

Why get a permit?

1. Because you'll have to take a class -- and you might just learn some stuff. Like how to avoid going to prison for shooting somebody under the wrong circumstances.

2. You might want to drive through other states (with your handgun). But some of those states have laws prohibiting possession of a loaded gun in your car --- unless you have a valid CCW permit. Louisiana's permits are honored in over 30 states.

3. CCW allows you to hide your gun. And unless you've had some serious gun retention training, not allowing thugs to know (a) you have a gun and (b) where that gun is located on your body, would be good things.

However, if you can't qualify for a permit (criminal record, incredibly lousy shooter, etc.) -- don't waste that $125 applying for a permit.

This is a two way argument.

You can Open Carry to prevent a common street criminal mugging you. CC, the thug will point a gun at you having the uper hand, demanding what he wants. Thugs will pass on OC just like they do not rob police.

What is right what is wrong? Just be glad good folks are carrying

Although I prefer the element of surprise I definitely agree with this. I have never read a story of someone OC'ing and losing possession of his or her handgun.

I'm not sold on the surprise theory. When you you yell surprise and take action? When you have a gun in your face?

countless numbers of LEO's have been disarmed and killed with their own weapons.

eta: here's one right here in BR a few years ago

A store detective sought Wax’s assistance after noticing that Williams was leaving the business without paying for two cameras in his back pockets. Williams seized Wax’s pistol, fatally shot her, wounded the detective and another witness, then bolted from the store and hijacked a car in the parking lot, according to the Supreme Court’s summary of the case. Williams later surrendered.

I bet in most of those situations even if CC the outcome would have been the same.

Lets turn the tables again to OC on this argument.
How many CC were killed?

Either way you are dealing with bad guys on the other side looking for trouble. Just Carry to how you feel comfortable

It don't think it happens often, but it does happen apparently.

I would much rather them not know I'm carrying. The YouTube user who uploaded the video is a douchebag FYI.

Bingo. Plus, if you are polite and sober cops like me will let you go with no cite for most traffic violations. Food for thought.

There is a guy that goes around just touching OCers guns and snapping pictures of it somewhere. For the life of me I cannot find it. Conceal your strengths.

Well in a grappling situation where the weapon is wrestled away from an officer, probably.

In the above situation though, had she not been armed or had been CC'ing and never drawn her weapon, she might have taken a beating, but the perp would have likely just run off.
He saw her gun, grabbed it and used it to kill her. All because of about $5 worth of disposable cameras.

I agree, but I'm just saying bapple's comment was a bit exaggerated.

This, along with the old "rack the slide to scare the intruder" idea, is a well-worn internet myths. And I'm sure you believe it.

But you have my blessings -- go open carry all you want. I'm not the one wearing the "Shoot Me First" t-shirt. And don't worry about retention training stuff -- probably never need it.
