What would you do? Every scenario I've seen that added money to the payroll you've dismissed.

I wouldn't trade a top 5 lottery pick for a guy on an expiring that will probably get paid a good bit again. I'd rather get another young piece and continue to develop.

I'm fine with a patient, multi-year rebuild.

Don't get me wrong, I would prefer to win sooner rather than later, and I KNOW that Benson feels that way, but I would rather patience and find the RIGHT deals.

Deng for the #5 is a Jeff Bower deal.

The pick should be irrelevant, If you can get a better player through trade than at the draft selection then do it. We seem to already have our core guys in place in Gordon and Davis. We already have a team full of young guys around them. We need to add some veterans with talent to this roster and try to compete next season. I definitely think Deng would fit in perfectly for this team but I wouldn't do it if some type of extension wasnt involved.

A large cash payment to the accounting firm which runs the draft lottery may be a good choice then.

Not necessarily. Any player we draft will make less than half of what Deng will be paid. So, to get Deng, it costs the pick AND significant additional cap flexibility, whereas using the pick only costs the pick

I think a few things have to be considered. First, I would not consider it until we have an idea of who we would be able to pick with our pick. Second, an extension would have to be worked out with Deng prior to the deal getting done and he would have to be willing to take less than 14.5 per year. A healthy Gordon, Deng, and Davis is very appealing over the next 3-4 years. However, I understand the downside with cap flexibility and Deng being at least five years older than our next "core guy." Interesting to think about though.

Its funny how each team views their own players.

I've been reading Bulls forums on realgm for the past few months and the majority of folks there can't wait to get rid of Deng. A lot are trying to figure what they can ADD to a deal to do a Gordon/Deng swap.

You read Pelicans' boards and its the exact opposite.

Personally I wouldnt do it. Gordon's upside is still too high.

Agree that Thibs doesn't want to give up.Deng.

SI on the Bulls offseason makes a Deng deal seem unlikely too. But perhaps Dell can buy their 1st since they are in salary trouble..

If they really wanted to lose some salary they could just amnesty Boozer(let Gibson start - they just gave him $40 million), keep Deng for one more year to stay as competitive as possible, then let Deng walk after the season.

Thats basically $30 million gone

$30million off the cap over 2 years. Reinsdorf still has to pay the salary- minus whatever the boozer bid. And this season they still end up right at the cap for 7 players. boozers contract is ridiculous, but he is a good player. will be hard to improve after dumping him.

Boozer amnesty/trade after next season makes the most sense. like the si article says, their top 7 is legit (rose, butler, deng, boozer, noah, hinrich, gibson) next year.

So when exactly does his "upside" go out the window? After three seasons of injury/attitude problems?

I don't think the Pelicans should trade for Deng, but they definitely need to weigh their options with dealing Gordon - potentially for draft picks. The Bobcats will have high lotto picks for years so let's try to deal him there

Trading a top 10 pick for Deng on an expiring contract is just ridiculous.

I'd rather have any of the top 3 SFs in this draft (including Bennett) for the next 5 years than Deng for 1 or at the most 4-5.

Most of all, there are about 8 other players I'd rather be here and develop than a 30 something on the decline of his career. Though not "injury prone" so to speak, he has had injuries in the past and this season didn't exactly hold up. That tends to scare me with his age.
