Trout with sore mouths switch from shrimp to croakers. Anyone heard of this?

Talked to a buddy of mine who does quite a bit of fishing on the coast and he told me that an old timer gave him a tip on catching trout.

He said that about 3 weeks after the spawn has started and the shrimp have started migrating out of the marshes, that the trout's mouths get sore from hammering so many shrimp and getting stuck by their horns. The old guy told him to use live croakers and that he would notice a huge difference in the number of bites he got. Obviously, my friend was skeptical.

Sure enough, my buddy and his friends after an hour of mild to poor success with shrimp switched to croakers and immediately started getting bites from nice sized trout.

My question is, has anyone ever experienced this?

My understanding from talking to my friend was that the trout would start favoring croakers in late May or early June after gorging on shrimp for several weeks.

Well, that's why I'm asking. It was the first I've ever heard of that and I wanted to get the OB opinion.
Obviously the trout switch back to shrimp eventually, but he made it sound as if they just get picky or take a break from eating so many shrimp for awhile.

I think that was mentioned in Trout Masters by Jerald Horst.

being that fish are cold blooded and can't feel pain, I doubt the ever get "sore mouths". One of the reasons trout attack croaker is because croaker eat the trout eggs. The timing of "3 weeks after the spawn" may be more related to the time it takes for the croaker to invade the spawning grounds.

A lot of guys who focus on big trout in the summer use nothing but croakers, that and live pogeys. Only this is keeping pogeys alive is tough.

Croakers are awesome for catching big shite.

Never heard of them being the magic bait though.

I've had some of my most violent strikes from trout while using live pogeys. The absolute cadillac of baits in my opinion. Only problem is you need to hire a babysitter to keep those bad boys alive.

This is a myth.

And as said before, trout can't feel pain and thus don't get sore mouths. I propose it corresponds to an abundance of croaker in the area.

This has to be false, croakers have the fricking blade on their gill plate that will cut just as bad as a shrimp.

Not sure about his reasoning but live croaker is the best bait for trout along the gulf. I have seen where only live croakers would catch em. They wouldn't hit live cockahoe or plastic.

Per "Specks," trout spawning peaks at the first full moon in late April early May.

Not a very compelling debunking.

This

the trout are merely protecting their eggs from a natural predator.
