What do you think has to change for the secondary to improve in 2013?

The last 4 games passing yards by opponents:
MSU - 307 yds
Ole Miss - 316 yds
Arkansas - 359 yds
Clemson - 346 yds

With LSU losing two starters who were drafted, I think the secondary will be a bigger question mark than the DL. WRs were wide open so often that I don't know whether it was the safety play or the cornerback play that was hurting us. Getting Tre Davis will be a serious boost to the secondary because some analyst believe he is as good as his cousin. Mills have been given rave reviews but will he be much more improved this season than last. If I had to guess where the problems were, it seems that Simon was always out of position and Eugene wasn't able to hold down the slot WR at the nickel back spot.

We are still not sure if Rashard Robinson will be qualified. If he does, I could see him pushing for playing time with Mills and Davis being starters.

team chemistry. some guys were doing their own thing and others weren't giving their best effort.

this was all after we lost to bama. championship hopes were gone. no excuse, but the air came out of the balloon.

Mills and Collins both have a year under their belt to go along with their talent. Combine that with Loston's senior leadership along with Martin, Eugene, Raymond, Thomas, and Sandolph, we will have one of the most deep and talented secondaries in the conference next year. Also don't forget about Tre White.

The only thing that will need to be worked on is the cohesiveness.

some of it's just experience. I like the Jalens, both made some nice plays throughout the yr. Mills needed to add some strength, which he should be doing now that he's had a spring and will have a summer.

part of it is pass rush, which I think unfortunately may be worse.

part of it is scheme. Chavis likes to blitz slot CBs and try to put safeties on WRs. that just wasn't Reid or Loston's strength. and he doesn't seem like he'll change, so I just hope that whoever's at slot CB in nickel and mustang do their best Tyrann impression this yr.

Stephen, I agree with you. The team we saw play against Bama looked liked the 2011 defensive team we were all expecting to see. I can't help but think that if TM was playing nickel, Yeldon wouldn't have scored on that screen play to win the game. It would have either been a catch for a lose or a pick six. That's just how good that little dude was. If Robinson qualifies, I could see White moving down to the nickel with Mills and Robinson outside. Eugene seems to be more of a safety than a cover guy.

I think Robinson redshirts. Tre White is most likely to get some snaps at CB, and didn't one of the young CBs start making some noise this spring? Thomas maybe? I think he'll be in the mix in the 2 deep.

This x1000

One of the most disappointing aspects of our D last year to me was the lack of consistent pressure on opposing QB's (relative to the expectations going into the season - considering we had 2 NFL draft caliber DE's). We should have been able to pressure almost any team w/o having to blitz but unfortunately that rarely happened last year.

I don't remember if we were banged up but we certainly limped to finish line defensively. We faced some pretty good passing teams over that stretch and we were young. But hopefully that was just a product of being young and banged up

Loston did really well for his first year starting. Now he's a senior with experience and all the ability.

Mills was a beast and Collins improved over the year. He has the threat to be a great playmaker.

Thomas, Eugene, and Holmes all played really well in the spring game.

Martin and Thompson should be solid at the least.

Also Tre White and Robinson. White has starter potential from the get-go. Robinson is also a beast. I think he will qualify, regardless the team has enough depth to wait on him to do so.

3 out of those 4 teams had mobile QBs, so maybe Chief had the DL read more. That might be the cause for there being less pressure??? Against Clemson, the defense was on the field too long. 90 plus snaps. At that point I knew that it wasn't just playcalling and philosophy on offense, we needed to change the way we practiced and the whole structure of how we approached offense as a whole.

All the frosh that played to be better.

Which is possible considering every db weve had over the last several years. improved from year 1-year 2.

2 of their lingest drives, and the lingest, was in the first half. The O sucked, but lets not act like the d is completely free of blame.

Bama and Clemson games. Their winning drives were extended by defensive penalties. We had more defensive penalties last year than offensive. I thinks it has a lot more to do with players having one foot out the door coupled with inexoerience. Still diesnt explain why mingo jumped offsides double digit times.

With Simon, Mills, Reid, and Loston, we all thought we had enough to do well. Two of those guys will play on Sundays. That is why I'm thinking that our secondary is a bigger concern because we had the player last year. At DL, Johnson, Ferguson, and Rasco should be very good replacements. Either Allen or one of the younger DEs will step up and play well at the other DE spot. However depth will be a question for those guys. Lacouture has shown promise and Gilmore is supposed to be a stud coming in.
