He's certainly showed he is capable with the Foo Fighters. What do you think Cobain would have thought about his work with them, btw?

Because Kurt Cobain was the singer

Nirvana already had a lot of buzz on the West Coast before Grohl joined the band and it was a really huge break for him so I'm sure he was content to keep his mouth shut and just kill it on the drums.

It was also a huge break for Nirvana. They needed a drummer, and Grohl was amazing.

He could have allowed him to sing one song. Watching Unplugged, Dave seems so shy and complacent to Kurt. I used to think Krist was shy too but I read Kurt's bio and it talked about him going on stage in his underpants and jumping out of windows at parties.

Its Kurt's band, he can do what he wants. Why doesn't Dave let Taylor Hawkins sing some Foo Fighter songs?

this...although not technically better, Cobain's voice fit that band way better than I imagine Grohl's would've.

Not a huge Grohl fan after the first 2 FF albums.

Do you think Kurt would have liked Foo Fighters or would he think it was too mainstream?

Here is a good article about Kurt and what he would have thought of the Foo Fighters. I think he would love stuff like Let it Die and Walk but other songs might appear to be too commercialized for him.

I'm pretty sure Grohl never envisioned himself as a singer prior to Foo Fighters. I know he layered his vocals several times on the first Foo Fighters album to hide I guess what he thought was poor singing.

Would he hate it enough to shoot himself in the face, though?

Dave sang back up for Nirvana. Not sure what would have been the point of giving him an entire song to sing.

Dave did sing backup, but having a drummer sing lead is difficult at a live show, and their songs were made to be played live. It's why Dave switched to guitars in Foo.

He doesn't sing lead in the bands he played drums for like QOTSA and Killing Joke. Nirvana was built to be as lean as possible. Having a drummer be the frontman is just a pain in the arse and would detract from the visceral live shows.

And Kurt was a much better songwriter and had an amazing voice. Why mess with that?

I'm going to have to disagree with this. His voice fit the rough style of grunge, but it certainly wasn't "amazing." Grohl's voice isn't really any good from a singing perspective either. For the style of music, it doesn't really matter that they can't really sing though.

The real reason is that Cobain wrote the songs for Nirvana. I'm pretty sure that Grohl wrote the songs for Foo Fighters. When quality of singing doesn't matter for the genre, it makes sense that the person who writes the songs is the one who sings the songs. It just puts their personal stamp on the sound of the band.
