Now obviously this subject is subjective as hell and everyone had their own choice but who holds the crown for y'all?

I think Jason Boland has to be king although give turnpike troubadours another 8-10 years doing it and we could have a regime change.

One of the greats no doubt but I think Boland overtakes him, I can understand the argument though

steve earle (if you consider him red dirt) and guy clark would be up there too. then there's townes. there are a shitton of them that i hold in high regard, including randy rogers, cody canada, boland, etc. but REK will more than likely never be supplanted as my number one, because he was the key that opened the door to my knowledge of the rest of them.

i had heard of most of them, but he's the one that sparked the interest to find artists like him.

I don't know what Red Dirt entails enough to answer this. Surely it doesn't include Texas country type music. If so Jason Boland wouldn't be in the same conversation as people like Guy Clark, REK, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, etc.. And I like Jason Boland. He could be in there with Pat Green, Cory Morrow, Stoney Larue and those guys though...

eta- Just saw Chop's post. Sorry for the redundancy.

Boland

Bob Earl Keen is #2 in my book.

Can we define red dirt vs tx country? Is it just a matter of whether they got their start in TX or OK? For me Jerry Jeff is the King (I don't include Willie/Waylon in this genre because they are bigger than this), then REK, then the newer crop of guys--agree Boland is the best of them. This is assuming we are talking about Texas country/Red Dirt in the same genre.

I think red dirt country speaks of a certain time period as well as sound but if y'all don't agree ten Townes Van Zandt is the undeniable king and no one will ever top him.

I agree with everything posted, but I believe Bingham has the potential to be the king once it's all said and done. In my eyes, Mescalito is the epitome of everything country music should be

Eta: keep an eye on The Damn Quails too

If he can recapture the magic of Mescalito even one more time then he has to be a top contender. However I think he has to do that first and I have my doubts that he can catch lightning in a bottle again.

I'm pulling for him hard though. Mescalito was damn near the perfect country album.

Boland would probably tell you himself the conversation starts with Bob Childers.

I think you can put the Great Divide, REK, and to a much lesser extent Billy Joe Shavers and even Pat Green because he was touring these college towns pretty regularly before a real scene developed. But again you start with Childers and go from there.

He might but I don't equate being the first to do something with being the best to do something.

Per my personal preference:

Randy Rogers Band
Chris Knight
Older Cross Canadian Ragweed
Robert Earl Keen (if this is indeed considered Red Dirt)
Reckless Kelly
Stoney Larue

After that, no particular order for me.

I love some of Jason Boland's songs, and hate others. I am one of the few who doesn't care for his voice, as unpopular an opinion it may be.

Boland is possibly the only artist who does not have a song that I don't like. Pearl Snaps is the perfect country album to me. Also helps that he puts on amazing shows.
