What is it with restaurants and their aversion to websites and menues?

I understand a buffet or perhaps a fine dining establishment where the menu changes rapidly, but for places where people take out especially, and ethnic foods as well, is it really that complicated, or is this another one of those new fangled generational issues that will take another 20 years to finally catch on here.

"Hey Bob, there's this thing called the Internet, and as it turns out, people look stuff up on their cellular telephones. Some even order food with it."

"What's this world coming to?" "It's probably a fad. I think I'll just wait it out."

What are you talking about? I pretty much never have this problem. The most common problem I have is menus without prices. When I see this I just assume I can't afford it. If it's less than $50 a plate, there's no reason not to list a price, IMO.

I haven't had many problems with no sites. Clancy's comes to mind, but the menu can be found on the web. Most places I look at have sites. The smaller more casual places might not. Pics of those menus are usually on yelp or urban spoon. I prefer sites, though.

Well, I figured we just dined at different places seeing as how I'm certain we live in different places. I guess I was asking what sort of places you'd run into this problem with.

Yeah, but yelp and urban spoon are uploaded by people like you and I. I'm talking about a site where you can order over the net, or just a site with the entire menu rather than just local faves people ordered. Most of the time I end up having to use menu pix or the like for ethnic foods especially. It's just not very Internet friendly.

There are plenty of restaurants without menus and I am not a fan of missing prices, but I assume some restaurants don't want to constantly update and they don't want to deal with people threatening lawsuits if the prices aren't the same as the web site.

Yeah, they can toss that disclaimer about changing prices in there and that should be enough, but I'm sure people whine about that all the time even with the disclaimer.

People are going to bitch regardless, and they can black out the menu prices for all I care really. It just would be nice to pull up a menu at some of these places and see what piques my interest before I make a move.

Unless it's a restaurant where the menu changes daily, I would never try a restaurant before looking at the menu online. If I can't find it, I'm not going.

I agree. I think plenty of places that don't have menus, lose business.

In this day and age, every restaurant should have a menu up and every place with takeout should have an automated order system.

Boggles my mind how far back in the stone ages some places continue to reside.

Is it really a deal breaker if a place doesn't have an automated ordering system? I understand online menu and we have one, but is it necessary to some not to just pick up the phone and call in their order?

Not a deal breaker but sites that have automated get my business more often.

No busy signal and I know the order was entered correctly.

I like to see menus when I'm trying to make a decision on where I'd like to eat. I rarely look at the prices even if theyre listed. I don't notice if they're missing. I prefer to order to go from a live person, so I don't care about that option.

I look at menus on yelp and spoon when people takes pics of them and there's no website. I rarely read the reviews, though.

Huge pet peeve of mine. Posting a menu with no prices is such a bitch move.

My wife and I walked past Coquette in January and the menu posted in the window was nothing, NOTHING like their online menu. We ended up dining elsewhere, but mainly because the online menu wasn't as appealing as the menu in the window. We had made up our minds to eat elsewhere.

To be fair, Coquette's menu changes every single day. And while I think they should have changed the window menu as they changed the daily menu, they might just have it out there to give people an idea of what they're like.

You really missed out. I had an outstanding meal at Coquette, and from what everyone says, NOTHING is bad there.

It pays to read sites like this one about restaurants if you dine out frequently or to be educated on various places when you do dine out. It's sort of constant research for me. A hobby I enjoy.

Prices and menus change. Can't really rely on sites to stay up to date. I'd expect a window menu to be current, though.

Menus and automated ordering are the stuff of chains, not single unit restos. Lots of places will do takeout, but they're not interested in increasing the takeout volume....it's a PITA and costs a bit more (packaging in disposable containers, bagging it up) to provide than a dine in customers food. Especially in a place with a small kitchen.....

Are you looking for delicious or convenient? The two are often not found in the same place.

I'm perplexed by rejecting a fine dining place because the menu wasn't identical to that found online. What sort of high end resto has the same menu day in and out? A serious place (non steakhouse) will offer seasonal variations. Is it such a big risk to not see an identical menu several hours before you done? Why would knowing the menu is advance make a difference? I guess this is why midrange chains do such steady business.

I read menus to get an idea of the offerings. I know that many high end places don't have the exact menu online. In fact, many label what's there as a "sample". Reading sites like this one or other articles and blogs gives me more info on a restaurant than the website does in most cases.
