But that's not the criterion. It is who was more valuable to their specific team. What LeBron or Durant would do IF they played for the Knicks is irrelevant. They aren't voting for "best player".

ETA: Not to put too fine of a point on it, if Hornets/Pels had been comprised of four players other than Gordon who were the equivalent of, say, Xavier Henry, and Gordon somehow led them to the second round, you could make a credible argument (based upon your criterion) that he was "most valuable" to his team.

False. The criterion is who was most valuable in the NBA.

You're arguing that the MVP is a team stat, and that a player should be rewarded for playing with an otherwise bad team and penalized for playing with an otherwise good team.

Head in sand answer. You know Lebron could replace Carmelo and improve the Knicks. The vote is purely contrarian.

Whatever. I'm saying that, unless there is a specific criterion saying otherwise, it is perfectly valid to vote MVP based upon most valuable to his team (assuming the team achieves some measure of success).

That. Is. Not. The. Basis. Of. The. Vote.

If you disagree, you disagree. So what?

Then he should have voted for Lebron. Lebron contributed more to the Heat's record than Melo contributed to the Knicks' record.

That doesn't establish your point. It is the name of his league. So you're arguing it goes to the best player? Most recognizable player? Some people simply disagree with you. Live with it, brah.

There is opinion based upon objective and subjective criteria. That's why they have voting. I'm not saying agree with the guy. But it's not a "stupid" vote.

It goes to the best player in the league based upon the current regular season.

You're wrong.

It's valid to vote for Glen Davis, but it would be stupid, just like voting for Caramelo.

Excuse me, but wouldn't it be called "Best Player"?

Read this and get back with me:

Business Insider Owns Stupid MVP Voter

quote:

Washburn says that the Heat would be a 5th or 6th seed without LeBron. That means that they would have lost 37 or 38 games, compared to 16 with him. So he's saying LeBron is worth 21 or 22 wins.

He says the Knicks would be a lottery team without Melo. That means that they would have lost at least 48 games, compared to 28 with him. So he's saying Carmelo is worth 20 wins.

It's worth nothing that the Knicks played a significant number of games without Anthony this year, and were 7-8 in those games. Over a full season, that would equate to a 38-44 record and an #8 seed in the playoffs.

LeBron is more valuable than Carmelo based on Washburn's own criteria.

What do you mean by best?

Talent?
Production?
Efficiency?
Contributed most to team's success?
Present season only?

Well, you were refusing to follow logic, so I had to get illogical.

Someone really does need to ask that writer if he thinks the Knicks would be better or worse if Lebron replaced Caramelo. I really think that is the end of the argument.

Honestly, the question isn't whether the Knicks would be better with LeBron. It really isn't. It's based ONLY upon the actual rosters and individual performance/value on those rosters.

That is when you begin shoehorning criterion to justify not voting for Lebron. By every objective and measurable criteria, from individual performance to team performance, Lebron was better. His +/- effects on his team were more positive.

I'm sorry, but I refuse to accept that vote as reasonable. The link I posted shows that the guy is basically making flawed arguments by avoiding copious amounts of data that discredit them.
