All of these are rated pretty high. Im a beginner but plan to hit the range and start getting comfortable with the handgun.

Cabelas

Ive heard of Glock, S&W, etc.. this other brand Springfield Armory looks highly rated. What do you know about this brand?

Any suggestions/advice appreciated.

This will be used for home defense. I have a 5-shot .357 Taurus revolver but Im thinking I need something with more shots and extra clip. (hopefully I never have to use it but 5 shots than manual reload seems like a nightmare).

First things first. As a dedicated OB wannabe I have to tell you it is called a magazine not a clip.

As far as the pistols I have a Glock 19 and a Springfield XD. Both are awesome pistols. The XD fits my hand a bit better than any pistol I have ever picked up. You cannot go wrong with either. One advantage of the Glock 19 is that you can also use Glock 17 magazines to get a few more rounds into the pistol.

Can't go wrong with any of those choices. Personally, I don't like the Springfield as a polymer platform.

M&P I think is the best choice, but a Glock is easier to learn. They really are idiot guns. Just point and shoot and they break down in two steps.

I have two Springfield's. An XDs in .45 and an XDM in .40. I enjoy shooting both and have had no problems out of either one. I've also shot an XD in 9mm and it was just as enjoyable to shoot.

If you are looking for something smaller to carry and are dead set on 9mm, I believe Springfield is releasing their XDs chambered in 9mm.

Best advice is to shoot a few different ones, if you have access to them, and make your own decisions.

Look at all guns then decide on price range. When you start looking at guns you'll key in on features you like and features you must have...Striker or hammer, DAO or SA/DA (location of decocker), constant pull triggers, being able to fire without a magazine in, trigger being able to cock the striker, safety vs no safety, ...seriously just research all types. You may want to spend more, or you may not. Hell you may end up just buying the one you think looks the coolest.

I wouldn't trust a pistol that cost 5 dollars.

M&P .40 then when you have the extra cash, grab the .357sig barrel and the APEX duty trigger kit. You won't be disappointed but I cant promise you'll ever want to use another trigger again.
