The redwing blackbirds have been keeping the sparrows at bay. I saw a hawk last week with a bird flying off, but it does not appear that the hawks have focused in on the feeder yet. I would love to get pics of a hawk attack...

Another benefit of the feeding is watching the Coopers. They fly low through the neighborhood targeting Eurasians. The hit is impressive. I have one that appears almost the same time every evening for his bedtime snack.

I had a sharp shinned hawk come in recently that totally freaked every bird in the area out.
Do you guys remember that study they did where they measured the speed of alarm communications between all the birds in an area when a predator would show up? Basically when a hawk is coming, all the birds know it based on alarm calls before the hawk can even get close and it fans out. If you're paying attention to those alarm calls you can tune into that and keep your head on a swivel and find what set them off.
Pretty wild to be looking at a hundred birds making all kinds of racket and in a matter of maybe two seconds, you're now looking at ZERO birds and it's now absolutely silent. It's amazing that bird hunting raptors get to eat at all.

Another benefit of my new disc golf addiction. Buhlow is located on the edge of medium textured upland and the "roe gully" and red river bottoms. We will get upland and lowland species. Migration should be spectacular. Alread seen a shite load of buntings, and the tanagers are basically tame.

Yeah my money's on barn swallow for that one. Those little bastards are annoying as hell. If you ever let them nest, you've got them for years to come because they'll be back every year.

Swallows and a tennis racket....one confirmed kill, and neighbors get hours of enjoyment.

I'm thinking of buying a sparrow trap. I've been told that if you just ignore them, they die in a day. Really don't like the sink in a bayou idea.
