A Couple of Things From the Conference Call

I was thinking this morning about yesterday's conference call. I was in for most of it, and there are a couple of impressions or observations that I have. Some of this expands on what was reported in yesterday's thread.
First, this new regime is night and day, at least it seems so to me, when compared to the Shinn years. From ownership on down, it's just more professional and competent. It helps to actually have the money and other resources to put into the team. I also think the link with the Saints will turn our to be even more beneficial than I thought.
Monty also confirmed once again that he had upcoming FA's comment to him during games about coming to NO. Who knows how substantial those comments may have been. But he and Demps did talk about the fact that the quality of the organization (including as was posted yesterday, having an owner who was "all in"), the new facilities (practice facility integrated into the Saints' campus plus improved Arena) and the culture of the city will help attract FA's to this market.
Monty also suggested that there are plans to get AD and Anderson on the floor together more next season. Interestingly, he said that the absence of Smiht at the end of the year made that more difficult. I suppose because they could have used his bulk in that lineup. In fact, he actually said that one of the best lineups this past year was having all three of those guys on the court.
It was a good call. No doubt a lot of it PR, but that's fine. I like what I heard.
tl;dr

How exactly? Anything beyond getting first dibs on Pelicans tix or something like that? As a life long Saints ticket holder I am interested.
Also wished they would have just named the team New Orleans Saints Basketball, similar to the European model.

the speed comments were interesting. I don't think it means Monty wants to play faster, but who knows.
I think it does indicate that a name guard is coming. I wouldn't be shocked if it's jennings (to start) or ellis (to be jr/crawford bench scorer)- whomever the Bucks dont want.

They've said one of the benefits would be being able to offer more exposure to sponsors. Saints get 8 home games but Hornets have 41.

That makes sense.

I think the speed comments are aimed at Vasquez. He supposedly has said he plans to work on his quickness in the offseason. I don't think we're the only ones that realize Vasquez' speed was a game changer for the opposing team.

That and the fact that there's a synergy and efficiency in having the two organizations combined. They also think the fact that you have the Saints and Pelicans practice facilities combined and upgraded is an attraction (albeit not a major one) to FA's. And that this organization has shown itself capable of winning a championship.

This.
And maybe setting himself up for the eventual Vasquez trade/Rivers starting job.

In the short term, seeng Drew Brees in the lunch line had to send a message that this ownership can build a winner and create stars.
Plus the sponsorship benefits.
I detailed some pluses in a podcast if you want the link.

I think that's where I heard about the aforementioned sponsorship benefits. Is the 2nd show/podcast still going to happen?

A lot of things, not really for the fans though. More on the organzational side.

I liked that idea. Use the college model: have the same mascot, colors, etc. New Orleans Football, New Orleans Basketball, etc.

Just being in his presence will rub off on players. Greatness can do that.

@TigerinATL
no, they weren't. You can't add speed. Vasquez is young, and well conditioned for the NBA as his body will possibly allow him to be. He is 6'7 slow footed and already in his prime at 27

May not be able to add speed, but you can def bring someone in that already has speed/athleticism. Who else would those comments be aimed at?

I didn't say he'd be successful, I just said that that's what Vasquez supposedly said he was planning to work on in a recent interview.

If Monty says the team needs to get faster, then that means the guys he has now aren't fast enough. Lopez and Vasquez are really the only players that stand out in the not fast enough department. I don't see how else his comments could be taken other than he wants to get some fast players in to take minutes from the slow players.

Not necessarily true. If Vasquez has been training to get quicker, than he probably won't get any faster. However, if this is his first off season devoted to quickness training, I'd venture to say he could gain a step or 2.
