We used to go off the dike in Texas City in high school and have some success. Its closer to Houston than Galveston as well.

SLP is definitely dangerous. You can swept out in a heart beat. I read in the news very frequently of people dying or having to be rescued out that way.

If you have a kayak Beach Access 16 is a good area where you can drive to the beach, launch and troll for kings/jacks or drop cut bait(mullet, sting ray) for reds, black drum or sharks(blacktip, sharpnose, bulls).

If no kayak you can just pretty much pick the easiest access point along the beach, go out early, hope for glass and wade to the 1st or 2nd sand bar and fish with gulp, shrimp or pogies under a poppy cork or free lined and try to catch specks or spanish when the water warms up a little bit.

On the north side of the island there is a road near 8 mile i believe called sportsmans road that will talk to an area you can park your truck and wade for reds, specks or flounder. I've had good luck and caught many a flounder out that way on a gulp shrimp(new penny color) along the grass on a moving tide.
