I have a dumb question. What makes it "internet shopping"? I work for a company that ships all over the country (B2B) and some customers order from our website and no out of state customers pay sales tax. How would this not effect every business with a website? What am I missing?

I know there are no internet business owners out there would think to split their business up into separate entities in order to keep their separate internet sales under $1 million. Nah....that would never happen.
At some point this would become counter productive.

I do not have a problem with it, IF the choice is up to the states. Would help level the playing field for brick-and-mortar business. But then I rarely purchase anything online so I really do not have a dog in the fight.

I buy a lot of stuff off of ebay that i can't even purchase in louisiana. Not in favor of giving them more cash when they aren't providing a service for me. I'm already disappointed in how they spend a lot of my tax dollars.

Then shouldn't you only be charged the tax in which the business resides? I mean if you only want to "level the playing field for brick-and-mortar business."

Professional service firms must be licking their chops over this...it could be like the SOX era, but for Tax consultants.

Very exciting news, now hopefully amazon will open up physical locations in more states (the main reason they do not is that, if they have a physical location in a state, they are required to collect local sales tax there). Shipping times will drop and hopefully amazon will open up one of these nearby

How is this better for an amazon prime customer like myself? I get faster shipping but now I'm paying more because of sales tax and additional overhead.

Yeah, but at the expense of the customer.

Why should I have to pay GA sales tax for stuff I bought in CA?

Since the amount of goods being taxed is being increased, shouldn't the tax percentage be lessened?

Of course it will not be because this is just a money grab so the gov't can waste even more money.

They want to put a warehouse in every state, so they will be required to pay taxes just like b&m stores anyway. They don't want the smaller retailers to have an advantage.

I'm A' too and I'd prefer to be able to pick it up rather than have to wait. Plus I like being able to control when I get it rather than being at UPS mercy. I guess ymmv. And I pay sales taxes anyway because I'm an idiot.

Why would they do this ? The whole idea behind their business is low operating costs, low overhead, and slim margins.

Yep. Their "physical locations" are basically a room filled with PO Boxes. Things get delivered to the Amazon center and placed in the box. You get emailed a passcode. You go to the center, find your box, punch in your code, and pick it up at your convenience. Very low cost; not like a retail store at all.

It seems like it would be way easier for brick and mortar retailers like Walmart and Target to do this than Amazon. They already have physical locations, they would just need the automation.

If I were running the show at one of these companies I would be working hard to get out in front of this.

Why not just have it sent to the front door?

You can get it quicker. Also if it's something expensive that you have to sign for, you can pick it up at your own convenience. You still have the option of having it shipped but if you're like me you spend the whole day hitting f5 on the UPS page until it shows up .

I am against giving this state another goddamned penny more than I absolutely have to until that bastard Jindal is gone.

I don't see how they can draw a distinction between internet sales and sales by telephone or mail to out-of-state buyers. It's going to impact more than just internet shoppers.
