Two major changes for college basketball -- an earlier start to practice and a change in the shot clock -- could occur in time for the beginning of the 2013-14 season.
At a May 2 meeting, the NCAA Board of Directors will vote on moving up the start of practice by two to three weeks (would be Sept. 27 or Oct. 4 this season). And the following week in Indianapolis, the men's basketball rules committee will vote on moving the shot clock from 35 to 30 seconds.

After taking an informal poll of 37 Division I coaches Monday morning, the consensus among that community seems to be "yes" for both.

SEC Coaches quotes on the proposed Rules changes:

MSU's Rick Ray:
quote:

"I don't want to move the start of practice up. We are allowed to work out more than four players at a time after Sept. 15 as it stands now. Our sport is the only sport that covers two semesters, so it is long enough as it is. There is no need for additional practice time."

Andy Kennedy:
quote:

"I like the Oct. 4 date because it gives you more flexibility in preparing your team."

Johnny Jones:
quote:

"I like the early start, but we just may have to be more creative at the start of the season to create more excitement."

Frank Martin:
quote:

"I would like the earlier start date [even better] if they gave us say five more practices.''

Shorter shot clock should really improve things with the game.

No kidding. I am amazed how comebacks even happen in certain games with how long it is.

NBA has Ex. 48 minutes X 60 seconds / 24 sec clock equals 120 possessions.

NCAA will now have 40 min X 60 secs / 30 sec shot clock = 80.

24 second clock works too. Gives you 100 possessions.

NCAA is working with 68.5 possessions with the 35 second clock.

This. No reason for it to be any longer.

Around 12 more possessions per game with my fuzzy math. I wonder how low Wisconsin can keep the score.

The argument you hear for people being against a shorter shot clock is that in the NBA each team has guys that can bail you out at the end of the shot clock, a lot of teams in the NCAA don't have that. Notice most of the people against this are from smaller schools. I think its a great step in the right direction.

You'd think Rick Ray would be all about some more practice time cause his squad is certainly going to need it.

I LOVE the shortening of the shot clock. I was surprised that Bo Ryan was all for it though.

And I'm sure you have an enthralling reason why it should be?

I think the more credible connection is that more possessions makes for a faster-paced game, which favors squads with more talented depth. Smaller schools don't have that and compensate with a slower style of play (which is more effective with a longer shot clock).
