No wonder Hollywood insists on making Some Dumb Movie Number 5.
Yes and No. Movies have become such a large business and risk that they can't make anything completely new without taking a very large leap of faith with creative talent.
People can't differentiate between a quality movie and garbage. Hollywood produces 95% garbage. Pure trash.
I think people can differentiate between quality and garbage, that's not a problem.
What they can't do is tell you why a movie is great (or garbage to some extent). Then, they conflate their ideas of "great," "really good," and "fun."
I think the problem has more to do with the top end, most people not actually being able to tell a great movie from a simply good movie, than with the overall spectrum.
