My parents had beta max/vhs players and hbo when hbo was seriously just a fricking box with one channel.

ETA: And my mom was all into gadgets recording shite from HBO onto VHS tapes.

But if that doesn't seal the deal (and I'm not taking that as gospel, either) here's a Youtube link that definitely has the early 80's HBO look.

And to truly prove once and for all that I have no life, I looked it up and February 11th did fall on a Friday in 1983.

Dude, we're arguing for the sakes of argument.

ETA: Which only got me thinking with this POST

I think winter usually means Jan-Feb. There is only about a week and a half of "winter" on the back end of the year.

That Youtube link from earlier was from Feb 1983 which had to have been before ROTJ. That was an end of the school year release...had to have been.

You have valid points. I'll even concede your points, but understand this...

his post "well, when your nine years old, and theres a three year wait from Empire to Jedi, you don't have the dialogue from the last movie embedded in your brain. "

your retort "We had videotapes and cable channels back then. I know it was a long time ago but we weren't complete barbarians back in the day."

Which one has more merit to you?

Unless you came from a very wealthy family, the access to SW content was limited.

ETA: And I could probably argue the merits and actual substance more, but do we really need to do that? The guys point was pretty valid. We weren't barbarians, but our access back in the day was trivial compared to today. I imagine you're 35-45. We're in the same context for the most part.

Obviously as it related to Empire I didn't remember its availability correctly. I just must have caught a re-release (whether or not it was "official" like the 1982 one, I don't know) to have not had problems remembering the previous events.

Or maybe I just didn't care once I saw lightsabers and Leia in a gold slave bikini.

Easily my "problem". Am yet to be cured.

I don't care what you guys say. ROTJ had the speeder bike chase, the great space fight between the snub fighters and Lando and Wedge teaming up to make those tie fighter pilots look like amateurs. Not to mention the final confrontation between the Emperor and Anakin. And lest we forget Luke outsmarting the most notorious gangster in the outer rims?

The only positive you mentioned was the confrontation between Luke and DARTH VADER

Let's not get carried away. R2-D2 was the brains behind that little operation.

That droid doesn't scam his way into a drink server gig on Jabba's barge and Luke is entering year 31 of the Sarlacc's 1,000 year digestion cycle.

Star Wars premiered on HBO in 1982 and Empire was re-released to theaters in November of 1982. It was great leading into the release of Jedi in 1983. However, Jedi didn't get released to video until sometime in late 1985 if memory serves.

Looks like the movies did get some semi-frequent theatrical releases though in the early 80's so that makes sense because I remember Empire in the theater a lot clearer than I should have considering my age in 1980 compared to late 1982.

And HBO got Star Wars in late 82 or early 83 (depending on the source) so that must be when I got my tape.

Wondered about that. I have some memories of the promotional hype for Empire, but I was only like 2 when it came it out so I must be remembering some re-release between then and Jedi.

We had a bootleg VHS of Episode IV that someone must have ripped from cable, and I watched it until it didn't work anymore. Jedi was the first one I saw in a theater.

One thing I remember vividly... my dad brings me to see ESB. There are 2 lines 200+ deep outside the theatre.

One was for ESB. The other was for Airplane!

I was 9 at the time. I wish I would have sneaked into Airplane after ESB.
