What does one need to know when building a PC?

I understand that there are AMD processors/motherboards and Intel processors/motherboards.
What I don't know is what plugs into what.
There are 50+ types of AMD processors and 50+ types of Intel processors. Some dual core, some quad core, some 8 core. Some that are dual core are 3.5 Ghz. Some that quad core that are 2.5 Ghz. Are all AMD processors compatible with all AMD motherboards? Same question for Intel.
There are Nvidia graphics cards and then there are AMD Radeon graphics cards. This is where it also gets tricky. There are HD7800 series and the HD7900 series. Then there are GeForce GTX 650s, 660s, 680s. Then there are 650Tis, 660Tis, etc. 1GB? 2GB?
And what about the PCI Express? 3.0? 2.0? X16? Are these interchangeable? Are they not interchangeable?
All of this is outside my comfort zone on when it comes to tinkering. Hard drives, disk drives, power supplies, i can deal with those. But the real important pieces are a bit overwhelming to a newb like myself and others that will be building soon. In a nutshell, what do all the numbers and designations really mean. What makes one gpu/cpu/mboard reign supreme against another.

If serious post a budget and someone will get the parts, putting them together is easier than it sounds, the hardest part is the fan and LED plugins things are frikkin hard to read.

That you need more than a 250gb hard drive

that's just it, how is anyone gonna learn if someone else does the work for them?

Just go into PCpartpicker and it'll tell you whats compatible

But usually the higher the number the better the card (for these newer series). Something with 2gb is preferable
Radeon HD series goes somewhat like this: 7770, 7850, 7870, 7950, 7970
Nvidia is: 650, 650ti, 660, 660ti, 670, 680

Cards run best at 3.0 x16, but they are interchangeable

Logical Increments
A guy on this board sent me to this website. Apparently this has everything you need to know. Its amazing.

Sort of right sort of wrong.
SB's don't even support PCI-E 3.0 just IB's do.
You can still run a GPU in a 3.0 slot with a 1155/2011 SB but you dont have the extra lanes to the CPU open up. TBH tests users have contucted came to the result it is not relavant yet. The bus on GPUs aren't large enough to fully utilize 3.0. They estimate the bus needs to get to 512.

If he posts a budget we could make him a better build than the ones there. Its a helpful site, but each build just isn't consistent with all its parts.

-choose a processor you want
-find a motherboard that seats that SOCKET type
-find a graphics card for your budget
-add some RAM that the mobo can support
-get a quality power supply to run it all
if you make it that far, we can go further.

See, i cant do that. The sockets. How do i know what matches what besides it saying intel and amd?

Now you two are talking in a language the a lot of the rest of us read as....if you use lajwetrlawejk and do lasfdjads;fkj it runs find, but when you 3m 4rmm34lf it doesn't work as well.

The CPU description will say socket type such as lga1155. I learned a lot by googling my questions then reading articles and forums. Then here or their post questions. There is a ton of info out there.

finch, most of the sites we order from (newegg, tigerdirect, microcenter) have bundles or barebone kits matching processor to motherboard.
for example:
TigerDirect - AMD Kit
TigerDirect - Intel Kit
NewEgg Bundle Deals
MicroCenter - AMD Bundles
MicroCenter - Intel Bundles
often if you purchase a "bundle" you get one or the other discounted.
- then just match the RAM to the mobo.
- pick a gfx card for your budget
- pick a case you think is pretty and fits your budget
- and a power supply to power it all
just like jeff said.
