Why wouldn't a pitching staff of 9 closers not work?

Arms all stay fresh. Pitch an inning-maybe two-every day. No tiring. No acclimating or adjusting two-three times through the lineup.
Has anyone ever tried this?

For starters, injuries would throw a wrench in that plan.
Money. Each pitcher would be equally important requiring to be paid as so.

You need waaaay more than 9 guys to do it.
If you have a guy or two get in a jam and can't pitch out of it like a starter you would get into trouble quick
You can't find enough good pitchers to do this and feel out your staff.

Yeah except that everyone in your pen would pitch 100+ games a year
What a terrible idea

It is rare to see a closer work more than three straight games, even in Save situations...their arms can't handle more than 50-60 games...much less 162.

I kinda like the idea!

Are you kidding me? Are you really suggesting that a pitcher should pitch one inning for 162 straight games? Their arms would be shredded by the second week of the season.

Not to mention extra innings

So you want 9 guys to throw in 162 straight games?

Theoreticlly they would pitch 162 innings

But in real life half of them would throw about 20 before they needed arm surgery after the third week of pitching everyday

You gonna pull a pitcher that has a perfect game after 1 inning?

Posted on 4/10/13 at 11:20 pm to 1ranter1
oh, I know, it's a terribly stupid idea.

You could get a bunch of knuckleballers.

This would probably be pretty mentally taxing as well.

Buddy of mine and I tossed around a different idea: sign one top flight pitcher, an aging workhorse kind of guy, a knuckleballer, and maybe a guy who only throws junk.
Four of the five games of your rotation are those guys. The fifth pitcher is always open. For that spot, most of your remaining staff are open and you basically pitch Johnny Wholestaff. Here, you might occasionally see 9 pitchers in 8 innings, or you may just go with the hot hand. But the poibt is that the opposition can't prepare for who is out there.

You're drunk.

So wear out your whole bull pen in one game because you're too cheap to get a 5th starter?

This would not work because the ninth inning only happens once per game
