Why "Reality" shows are so popular....

To preface, I discussed with my wife the other day that I think (know now) that I'm a movie/tv snob. I don't mean to be, it's just I want to watch shite that challenges me and makes sense.
a) They're cheap to make
b) The viewing audience is stupid
Is this really the formula? a + b = $tv
This is my view of it. Is there more that I am not seeing?
That said, what am I missing? This goes for every "reality" show I've known of. The only two I've paid even feign attention to were Last Comic Standing and King of the Nerds crap.

yep. Networks are all about "reality" tv because they can throw up a $50k prize and have people cut their dicks off for it. Stupid people are so enamored to get their 15 minutes of fame that any prize is just justification to do something stupid and ridiculous.

I've tried to watch some of this with an open mind and end up wanting to hang myself.
The race to whatever $$ to lose your dignity and self-worth. The need to watch pseudo celebs do some activity.
May I'll initially watch the celebrity dick off contest for an episode or two.

No you don't have to like all comedies but the OP said the people who watch reality shows are stupid. You said "I agree except the reality shows I like"
All I said was that's it funny when posters call people stupid for liking a type of show but watch those same type of shows.

Some reality shows can be informative, interesting and entertaining but a majority pander to the lowest common denominator. Same with other forms or sub forms of media.

While I know that Reality Television is normally held under the same banner. I don't think all Reality Television is created equal.
I certainly wouldn't throw The Deadliest Catch into the same ring as shite like The Real Housewives of wherever the frick, and I wouldn't even put that up against Lizard Lick towing or Hardcore Pawn (which is where "Reality Television" begins to take the weird turn where it becomes so bad it's good)
While I think 98% of this genre is garbage, every now and about (few and very far between) it does spit out something that is genuinely good.

some I like (Bar Rescue for the transformations).
