because I don't play online or use online features with my xbox? Really wouldn't want to pay for something I don't use.

Personally I think this online thing (IF TRUE) is MS trying to force people into buying XBL subscriptions.
If they made XBL free (PS style, won't happen though), then I wouldn't see any problem with it.
