Game of Thrones - Question for those who've read and watched (possible spoilers)

I just marathoner through the first two seasons via HBO GO this week.
It's a great show so far, though at times very negative. Like watching Empire Strikes Back every week. Good guys need something positive at some point!
Anyway it got me wondering how the books are. For those who have read and watched, what are your thoughts between the two?
Also, if I've only watched and not read, would you recommend to start reading the books now?
Appreciate yours thoughts.
Eta: my motive behind the thread is due to my impatience of waiting on the show. So I could read the books. However I don't know how consistent the two have been.

Books blow the show out of the water. Each one is 1000 pages. So much more immersive.

Start from the beginning. There's a lot the show leaves out

This.
Read books 1-3.
Then when finished, re-watch seasons 1 & 2 and then by that time you can marathon 3

Absolutely worth a read.

READ! If you watch season 3 before reading Storm of Swords, you're going to miss out on one ofthe best reading experiences you'll ever have.

The first season follows the first book very closely except for one glaring omission regarding Lyana Stark.
The second season and book start to deviate pretty greatly.
I fear how far this season will deviate.
But yeah, the books are some of the best shite ever written.

You have a consensus here!
Storm of Swords is the best. Couldn't put it down

Just finished storm of swords and wow what a great book. Best in the series so far. The epilogue was awesome...can't wait to see where that storyline goes.

Decided to read the first after episode 3 of the first season. Had read the first 4 books by episode 6. Incredible series that is much better than a great tv show. Do yourself the favor

1. SoS
2. GoT
3. Feast
4. CoK
5. DwD
Feast is great especially considering DwD is really good.

It's good, it's just seemed meh to me after SoS.
That's a tough act to follow.
I intend on reading it again sometime but I'll probably read DwD again first.

Honestly, the first season follows the book so closely you don't really need to read it. Just google Neds dream and everything else is pretty close to word for word.
Then read the other ones
Then read the other ones

I have a few pieces of advice:
1 - Read the books. They are very good. Possibly great. (I'll have to wait on a re-read to make that final determination and one of my personal quirks is I can' really re-read books for a few years after my first reading - even something I consider unquestionably great like Lord of the Rings).
2 - Don't read any further in this thread or in any thread with spoilers in the title. Sooner or later people will post things that you would rather experience firsthand whether you choose to do that through watching the show or reading the books. I'm one of the least spoiler adverse people I know but for this particular book/tv series there are things I wish I had stayed away from prior to reading them for myself.
3 - Don't ask even general questions like good guys / bad guys or negative v. positive tone until you read the books or see the rest of the series. Those are valid questions and deserving of in depth discussion. But said discussion will almost certainly lead to spoilers. If you are very curious on the issue, I think you can read some of the biographical/autobiographical stuff on Martin or some of his earlier works (he wrote a ton of short stories which make for fast reading) without too great of risk of running into GoT/SOI&F spoilers.
Enjoy.

I would have agreed with you after my first read-through. There were so many new characters introduced, and the omission of many of my favorites was very off-putting. However, after reading through the books again in preparation for this season, I absolutely flew through AFfC. I was much more interested in the Dornish aspect of the books because I had already familiarized myself with the characters and was able to dive in much deeper.
It's going to be tough anytime an author introduces a ton of new characters halfway through a series and cuts back on the chapters involving fan favorites, but the book is actually very enjoyable after you become familiar with the characters.
I feel like I said the exact same thing in each of the two above paragraphs. Oh, well.
