What Caliber would you recommend for home defense?

for a night stand gun?
9mm?
.40?
and what gun would you recommend?
it would most likely be collecting dust and get shot about once a month at the range.
taking a class with my brother next weekend on handgun safety since i have only fired rifles
i know nothing of handguns and calibers... so sarcasm will NOT be detected

This is a long standing debate and honestly the only answer is what you're most comfortable with.
Some people go with .45 some can't handle more than a .22. Anything is better than nothing. Do some shooting and see which one works better for you.
Me personally my nightstand handgun is a .40 but I don't go for it first. I go for the 12 gauge in the closet.
Nursetyger's is a 9mm. She couldn't handle a .45 well. (That's why she was shooting the Glock in that pic KR)
