Since Victor Butler agreed to a two-year deal with the New Orleans Saints on Thursday, it means the end of the Dallas Cowboys' 2009 draft class.

The Cowboys drafted 12 players in 2009 in what was billed as a special-teams draft. What it became was one of the worst drafts in the last 10 years.

No starters were developed from the class and only six made the 53-man roster. Things started off on the wrong foot when the Cowboys began the draft without a first-round pick, handed to the Detroit Lions as part of the Roy Williams deal. The Cowboys traded their second-round choice to Buffalo for third- and fourth-round picks.

Out of curiousity, I would like to know what the average retention rate is on a draft class four years later. Can't be higher than 25%.

I'd like to know a reliable number on that too but that Cowboys draft had 12 players instead of 7 so it is still well below average

meh, the Saints only have two players from their 2009 class left...

but they only had 4 picks. And both are starters with one being a pro-bowler.

Broncos had 10 picks in '09, only 3 remain on the roster. Of the 3, Robert Ayers(1st), Knoshon Moreno(1st), and David Bruton(4th), Bruton is the most impactful. Bruton is mainly a special teams player.

Jets end up with 3 picks; Mark Sanchez(1st), Shonn Greene(3rd), and Matt Slauson(6th). All three have started the last few years, but only Sanchez is currently under contract(a rather cumbersome one at that).

Trading up for Shonn Greene, now a backup in Tennessee, cost the Jets a 4th, a 7th, and their own 3rd to grab the 1st pick in the 3rd round. The acquisition of Brett Favre the previous season, who would now claim to be "retired", cost the Jets' their extra 3rd acquired from the Vilma trade. The trade up for Mark Sanchez was actually probably the best move on paper, as it only cost a 2nd and 3 backups to move from 17 to 5.

Some bad drafts by many in hindsight

I think the Patriots have 1 left.

The average is like 3 players left after 3 years, so not that crazy, considering they didn't have a 1st or 2nd round pick (those most likely to stick around after 3 years).

Saw some tweets about it. It's like 2 guys after 4 years. 3 guys after 3 years.

0 for 12 seems on the outer edges of the retention rate.

Only slightly worse than the Joey Galloway trade.

God, the karma for the Walker trade seems to have lingered. And I'm not a Cowboys hater.

so this is pretty much how it normally goes. most guys drafted after the first 2 rounds dont make it

True, but maybe 1/3 or 1/4 of the average roster is comprised of 1st and 2nd round picks...

Yep, John Mara fricked the cowboys and the redskins on the cap penalty in between cba's, not to mention guys like Doug Free counting $10 million against the cap this year.

quote:

The Cowboys had only $177,000 on this year’s cap when the free-agent signing period began two weeks ago. After inking Sims to a one-year deal, it gave the club a little more than $100,000 on the cap, which only counts the top 51 contracts on the roster.

Orton restructured his deal to sign LB Durant, I think for the veteran minimum.
