Figured I'd come to the OB about this...family is putting in a pond on the property and was curious if anyone knew any good tips or products for keeping moccasins and other slithery foe away from the shore line.

Thanks in advance

If you build it... they will come.

Keep brush to a minimum and that's it.

That's what I kind of figured...I knew it would be inevitable

The tip about keeping it mowed and brush to a minimum is good advice, but it's inevitable.

Just kill everyone you come across to keep them beat back.

I've heard hanging the dead ones in trees to set a perimeter works as well.

If all else fails, get a king snake and put it out there

I heard it makes them more vindictive.

I know barn cats and king snakes are good for prevention...I've also heard possibly putting moth balls around it might work

But my 12 gauge will work just as well

The only time in my 30 years I can remember not having moccasins in our ponds was when a 10 foot alligator swam up a flooded creek and set up residence. He also ate all the turtles, otters, nutria and beavers that looked at the water. Amazingly the fish in the ponds did okay. So that's my advice, get a gator.

Or keep the banks clear of plants.

Keep it cleared of cover.

Barn Cats.

King snakes.

Teenaged boys with shotguns and rifles.

That's all I got.

Hogs eat snakes. But then you have to kill the hogs for messing up your property.

Really the only time I start getting snakes in my pond is when the woods start drying up. At that point, I make a clean sweep once a week with a .22.

Keep the grass cut is best.

Cant keep them away and they are part of the ecosystem. Just keep you walking areas clean and clear and watch where you step and put your hands.
