Granted, I'm only 30. Wasn't really my time.

Sure, there's the timeless hits like Wild Nights and Brown Eyed Girl, etc. But I don't know that anybody could ever replicate his timing and cadence on his songs. He just had a really unique way of making the vocals intertwine with the music instead of being separate from it. He was also a pretty damn good songwriter.

I guess I've just always thought of him as having those few hit songs and that being the end of his contribution to music.

Forgive me, Music Board, for such an oversight. Thankfully, I heard Moonshine Whiskey on Sirius and had to dig deeper.

He is one of those artists who are only known for their commercial hits that arent that great but have amazing songs that most never hear.

Beach Boys are also in that category.

I had a similar Van Morrison awakening in my early/mid 20's. It has since passed, but I still like his stuff.

Into the Mystic is definitely one of my favorites too. I saw The Allman Brothers Band play it at Jazzfest about 6/7 years ago with Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks killing it on slide. Hands down the best version I've ever heard of the song.

I used to play it for skanks I'd bring home from the bar. Worked 50% of the time every time.

I like the younger version. As he got older he developed a little more R&B sound and a deeper tone. Still good but didn't have quite that unique, raw quality to his voice. Atral Weeks was definitely his peak.

Jackie Wilson Said= vintage VM.

I woke up damn near every Saturday as a child to my parents pumping van throughout the house while my mom was in the kitchen baking something of another.

I can't hear him without thinking of my childhood

He is one of my top 5 singers easily.

Astral weeks is fricking amazing, and my favorite one of his albums. The Way Young Lovers Do is one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time, and I have made sweet sweet love many times to that song and others on the album

I can't stand his famous songs anymore. Skip over them when I am listening.

Do yourself a favor and dl his complete discography

Thanks for this thread. I have always heard his other songs are way better than his hits. Been meaning to check this out for a while.

There's a ton of his stuff on spotify.

I will give those a listen.

Into the Mystic stops me in my tracks no matter what I'm doing. I always have to stop and listen. And then find it on my phone and listen again.
