Sciambra got hurt vs. Auburn last year, so I compared his stats this year vs. last. He's actually having a better year in 2013.

Goes to show you how much better this team is. He's fighting to stay in the line up in 2013, whereas last year he was sorely missed after getting hurt. Role has changed a little this year as lead-off, thus the increase in walks.

(22 Games Played Both Years, 61 at bats last year, 64 at bats this year)
Batting Avg: 2012 - .246, 2013 - .250
Runs Scored: 2012 - 10, 2013 - 14
Walks: 2012 - 6, 2013 - 16
Strike Outs: 2012 - 10, 2013 - 16
On Base %: 2012 - .324, 2013 - .429
Stolen Bases: 2012 - 2 of 4, 2012 - 2 of 2

EDIT: Crap. I have a faulty memory. It turns out he was a pretty solid starter from the 3rd weekend to the 6th weekend of the season, when he got injured. I was thinking that he was the third guy Mainieri started in CF last season, but he was actually the second. It was Jones for 2 weeks, then Sciambra for 4 weeks, then Foster for less than 2 weeks, then Fields, and then Katz for the super regional against Stony Brook.

I still say that he was struggling to stay in the lineup though. One more bad weekend series and I think he would have started getting platooned with Foster & Fields.

For what it's worth, LSU had a worse record when he started CF than anyone else except Katz ( LINK):

CENTER FIELD:
Arby Fields 31 (22-9)
Chris Sciambra 16 (11-5)
JaCoby Jones 8 (7-1)
Jared Foster 8 (7-1)
Mason Katz 2 (0-2)

But we clearly could have used his speed down the stretch vs. Stoney Brook, particularly when Katz was moved to CF.

Sciambra struggled the first few weeks of last season. He had just started hitting the ball consistently when he was injured. That made his absence feel more acute at the time.

Sciambra wasn't tearing the cover off the ball, but after we moved Jones back to 2B, he was a formidable CF. Played solid defense and ran well, which at the time, is all CPM was looking for. A strong defensive outfielder was hard to find on last year's team.

With the gloves we have out there now, it will be harder for Sciambra to remain in the lineup solely because of his defense.

That's what I recall - seems like he had turned the corner batting when he got hurt. His fielding was always solid. I hope he stays in the lineup - he seems to consistently get on base or at least make the pitchers work.

Nothing against the other guys, though - odd to have more outfielders than we can use this year when we had to put poor Katz out there last year - love Katz, but he's just not a natural center fielder

That defensive OF that we put on the field against Stony Brook was maybe the worst I've ever seen in D1 baseball.

Won't find many people to argue with that.

McMullen with lead-off start tonight. Maybe a courtesy start since he went to Delgado?

The previous statement isn't saying a whole lot. Neither year has been overly impressive. I always thought he was a bit overrated and over hyped. I assume this is because he is a hometown player. Laird to this point has already accomplished more than Sciambre in his career. In fairness to Sciambre he did have a nasty injury and he still has 2 years left to play. He may end up being a really good player when it's all said and done. Time will tell
