.223 and 5.56 are far too small to kill any kinds of animals. A .300 WinMag is the minimum.

Seent it. The fact that it's expanding into calibers that are actually good for hunting is a plus. .223 is minimal and in my opinion only in the realm of experts for taking deer. People use them for kids, but I would love to see how many they lose as a result.
The platform though... Tits.
It's tough. It takes abuse. You can ride around on a four wheeler and fill it with dust and it's fine. One of the reasons they still use it in the military. It's a proven great weapon. The only thing holding it back is people trying to adapt .223 to hunting situations. Which is not to say I don't have one hangin off me when I'm riding the four wheeler around the lease in case I jump up some hogs. I don't care if they run off though. I just want them to die.

There are already a few right now. People use 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC fairly regularly. They fit into the AR15 platform.
When you get to the AR10 platform your choices open up a bit. Since its chambered in 308, anything with that same parent case can be used, like 260, 243, 7mm-08, etc.
Of course, you can get it chambered in 243-08 as well.
