After the storms moved out this morning, I headed to the woods. I found a gobbler in a field with some hens and tried to get them to come my way, but they never got closer than 100yds.
Backed out of there and went to a clear cut, and called up 2 hens with this young gobbler in tow. About 16lbs or so, with a 6 1/2 inch beard. A jake, but a legal bird.
Turkey breast for supper tonight!

That looks like a bearded hen to me. You sure about the Jake??? Did you post the wrong picture? Also a VERY long beard for a Jake, it's still somewhat of a trophy with a beard like that on a hen. Seen them many times.

Although it doesn't show up well in the picture, the head was too red for a hen, plus he was taller than the hens he was with.

Head looks like a hen to me and the bird is brown not black. It could be just the picture. Did the bird have spurs of any sort, if it didn't she is definitely a hen. By the way I am not saying this to give you a hard time, rather trying to help.

Also looking at the head closer I see no waddles a jake would have waddles.

Looks like a bearded hen from here too. I consider those to be great trophies as honestly I've seen two in my years of turkey hunting. Hens do occasionally have spurs too but Da Hammer is right, if there's no sign of a spur its likely a hen.
I killed a Tom last week that's head was light blue and had none of the distinctive red and white on it. When he pitched off the roost I gave him a look and he had no beard to speak of. I thought to myself its a hen, but then he went to gobbling and strutting his fool head off. No beard at all, not even a root but a full fan and 3/4" spurs...

Wiltz the my second best bird ever had no visible beard, mites had cut it off at about 1". Had 1 3/8" on one leg and 1 5/8" on the other though for hooks.
Two of the places I have hunted over the years have a large population of bearded hens so I have seen several. Agreed a trophy.

There were "bumps" where the spurs normally are. I guess it could be a bearded hen, could be a jake, IS a shot turkey.

Save her wing bone and use it as a wing trumpet call.. I've heard hens work the best but its never legal to take them so the only shot you have to get a wing bone from them is roadkill or a bearded one.
if you are in to making your own calls and stuf

Tail fan...
Maybe it is a hen? I don't know.... I saw the beard and shot it when it got to 35yds.
I saved the beard and the fan for a plaque mount.
I have some wingbones from gobblers in my freezer, to give to a man that makes wingbone calls. For every 2 you give, he will give a finished call. I have one of his calls but have never used it.
