Have we ever had 3 more impressive newcomers as starters in the same year?

Bregman - .398 BA, .581 SLG, 37 hits, 24 runs, 20 RBI, 2 HR, 6 SB, only 7 K in 106 PA

Laird - .333 BA, .419 OBP, 19 runs, 27 hits, 5 Sac, only 7 K in 98 PA

Ibarra - .352 BA, .466 OBP, 25 hits, 16 RBI, only 13 K in 89 PA

We probably have had three newcomers as starters have a better year than those three. Because not everything that happens now is the best thing to ever happen.

Would be absolutely pitiful without these guys, thank god Mainieri finally got another good class with bats in it.

Javi hasn't had much of a chance to influence them yet.

Laird is kind of a freshman.

Next season he will be a draft eligible sophomore, like Gausman was last season.

His defense was pretty pitiful, well, it still isn't much better, but his bat makes up for it.

Perhaps. We'll have to wait a couple of months to know for sure.

This is what I wrote in the " Tell me why we're going to be better next year......." thread from April 2011.

quote:

Mainieri has typically had bright spots in the form of fresh new talent on every team he's had since he's been at LSU...

2007 -- Dean, Ochinko, Schimpf, & Mitchell
2008 -- Clark (didn't return), LeMahieu, Gibbs, & Landry
2009 -- Mahtook, Nola, Ott, & Ch. Jones
2010 -- ???
2011 -- J. Jones, McCune, Gausman, & Rhymes

We just crapped out last year on getting new starts who would help build the program in future years, and now we're paying for it.

Then I made a couple of threads last spring ( LINK & LINK) about how disappointing the rookie hitters were for 2012, but at least our pitching recruits were good.

I dont think we have to worry about losing him after next year unless he just puts up absurd numbers, learns how to hit lefties and gets a good move in stealing.
