re: Dying vet writes scathing letter to George Bush and Dick Cheney

quote:

Why is it garbage?

1. It ignores all of the other worthless wars that Presidents and Vice Presidents from both parties have lead our country into. It calls out Bush and Cheney, but completely ignores the amount of troops who continued to die in Iraq while Obama was in charge.
2. Iraq was a threat to it's neighbors.
3. It implies that the Iraq war lead to the problems we see in the Middle East today.
4. It states that 1 marine commits suicide a day, as if it is a direct result of the Iraq war. The fact is that the rate of suicide has increased among non military citizens at the same rate that it has increased among military. It has nothing to do with the Iraq War.
5. Attacks Bush for being wealthy and war hungry but ignores the Clinton's wealth and Bill's ability to launch missiles the day that his affair with Monica Lewinsky became public knowledge.
6. Ignores Obama's wealth and love for not only drone killing terrorists, but innocent people all over the world, but calls Bush and Cheney liars.

This letter is a political hatchet job full of blatant lies, half truths, and complete disregard for world or U.S. history. It is garbage.

Shame that he will die believing such nonsense.

As for the Iraq War, it's become the line that it was certainly a mistake and pointless, but I disagree. Unless you are simply against all foreign wars on principle, you would have to actually make a compelling argument that it was all for naught. I haven't seen that argument yet.

Sad for him that he is so bitter.

I know dozens and dozens of Iraq vets that do not see things the way he does. In fact, I would say on balance even given all we now know, the world is better off that we intervened in Iraq.

Saddam was a mad man and a ticking time bomb for the entire region. He had at one point WMDs and would have gotten them again. I KNOW he had them because he used them - on his own people and on Iranians. This is a historical fact, not a supposition. - here is one example WMDs Used by Saddam

I also know we now have the benefit of hindsight and many people feel differently than they did at the time. That sets up this BS dichotomy in peoples mind about the justness of the Iraq war - there were multiple UN resolutions that lead to the invasion, it was not like this was solely based on Bush and Cheney's whims.

In fact, I am sure if you ask either one of them they would rather not have had to send our young people into harms way. I don't care what your political persuasion is, I really don't think any leader likes to send our warriors to battle.

This guy is pretty bitter and that is sad because he will spend the last of his breaths bitter rather than at peace.

Tomas Young admits to joining the Army seeking revenge for 9/11. That was his mistake. He was never promised an opportunity for revenge by the Army. His regret for events after he made the critical mistake, while clearly deserving of sympathy, do not give his criticisms of Bush and Cheney any more credibility, or authority, than the criticisms of anyone else.

Where did all of the strength of his convictions come from? He claims the war in Iraq was an illegal pre-emptive war. Why did he not refuse to deploy to Iraq if he felt this way? Surely time in prison would have been preferrable to his conscience than commiting crimes against humanity.

I respect him for his service and sacrifice, but my respect is diminished by the letter. I hope he finds some sort of inner-peace before he passes.

This letter reveals one man's feelings and one man's story.

This is my biggest gripe. His opening, he describes all the people he speaks for. I know quite a few veterans, and I know Mr. Young doesn't speak for them.

Mr. Young's service is commendable, and he certainly has the right to speak his mind.

It's truly sad that this young man wants to end his life with such hate in his heart. I don't know him from Adam but he should be proud of his and his fellow servicemen's actions.

Since his expression of feelings reinforces the liberal hate for Pres. Bush and VP Cheney, Mr. Young's story gets pushed by the idiot Charles Grodin and other outlets. I'm sure Mr. Grodin did a counter story with Proud Veterans....

This dude is just another Democrat.

And I don't say that because of the obvious political talking points he copied from his DNC newsletter, I'm talking about the fact that he joined the military and expect to reap all the benefits from it without doing the job he was getting paid to do. He seems like the type that would want to unionize the troops to keep them from having to go to battle.

The war in Iraq served a strategic purpose. Not only did we get rid of a serious threat to the region, we also established a presence that forced a lot of people's hands. We know now who the threats are and who aren't. Would we know Iran was so close to a nuke if we weren't on the ground in the region? Would Gaddafi have given up his WMD's if we hadn't gone after Iraq?

It's documented that Saddam's weapons caches were moved to Syria before the war. It's also documented that we did find chemical weapons in Iraq. Why is everyone still sticking to the old line that we didn't find anything?

And you dare criticize someone else over "obvious political talking points copied from a party newsletter"...?

From your link:

quote:

The munitions addressed in the report were produced in the 1980s, Maples said. Badly corroded, they could not currently be used as originally intended, Chu added.

Those old munitions were dug up from an old stockpile on the border with Iran, left over from the Iran-Iraq War. We knew they had them, we sold them the components to make them.

I didn't read that anywhere. That's from observation of the events that unfolded. As a non-Democrat, I have the capacity to observe facts, process information, and come to logical conclusions by myself.

And if we knew they were there, don't you think Saddam knew they were there too?

Were we lied to about Vietnam like we were about Iraq?

You can't be that naive.....

Of course the Dems lied about it from the start.

At least Saddam still had the WMD infrastructure (as noted by the UN post war inspections), and taking him out precluded another "all out war" (Iran/Iraq II).

Dear Mr. Young,

I thank you for your service and apologize if you did not understand that in the military you take orders not give them.

With all due respect to the letter's author, some of what he says is BS. Iraq wasn't a threat to its neighbors? Yea, not like they had a history of aggression and war with their neighors, or using chemical weapons on autonomous kurdish populations or anything.

No one signs up for an administration who would knowingly lie about something which would costs you or your fellow comrades their lives. What Cheney did will cost the US good soldiers in the future.

What about Obama having a shite ton of military still in Afghanistan and Iraq?
