Again I say...

No one else voted for it, continued it, perpetuated it?

Since you missed it the first time.

Does it matter? He was given an order, approved by Congress, from the President of the United States and his superior officers. He signed up to fight but didn't have any say on where he'd be fighting.

This is true. But I would love to see some of the ones that sent all these kids to their deaths respond to this letter. I wonder if a heartfelt apology from Bush, Cheney, and other politicians admitting that they royally fricked up would help? It would probably be cathartic for a lot of people.

We owe the men and women who volunteer for service that what they're asked to do is at least legitimate, especially when it comes to warfare.

Can you please explain to us how military action approved by Congress isn't legitimate?

A legitimate what?

He was abused even though his letter is somewhat inappropriate.

I agree with him being abused and am glad to see that you agree that it was at least a little inappropriate.

Probably in a similar manner Abraham Lincoln responded to death in the Civil War when he was being criticized in similar fashion:

Dear Madam,

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
A. Lincoln

Kid made a life-changing decision based on emotion.

That's never wise.

They were both unpopular wars that seemed to the public in both eras as never ending and unwinnable ones.

Does he mean a legitimate battle like the Battle of Mogadishu?

I guess our grandfathers weren't very wise men either when they enlisted in the military on December 8, 1941 because of emotion.

Vietnam was a bull shite war just like Iraq. Pretty sure just about everyone agrees on this.

Exactly...

But those of us who served didn't have the luxury of saying "Hey, I don't like this particular war".

To be honest, its an apt comparison. Can you conclusively say why either war was fought? Was it Constitutional? Did the President adhere to his oath to maintain the Constitutional rights of the citizens in either? Did the goalposts get shifted on what the goals of either war were? Were the soldiers sold a fight for one cause and then finding that they were being used for another, less popular one?

Sorry you were a sucker kid.
Skeptical old cynics like me know that its the blood of young idealists like you that oil the machine of state.
Sorry you were lied to and didn't have enough skepticism to look into what you were being told. Sorry you didn't know the history that brought those towers down.

But yeah, thanks for your service...'Merica...blah blah blah.
Damn.
