Rewarding mediocrity IMO.

Because each year there is one player in the NBA who doesn't start, that contributes a lot to a particular team, scores a lot of points and makes plays, and the NBA gives an award to him.

Coming off the bench and significantly contributing in an NBA game is mediocrity

If they aren't good enough to start, they shouldn't be awarded.
Why not a fifth man or the year? Or 12th man of the year?

6th man is 1 of the most important positions in basketball. It's extremely important to have a guy on the court that can score extremely well when you're starters or scores are on the bench getting a breather.
Ginobili is good enough enough to start. Harden was a 6th man at OKC, now he's a top 5 scorer. JR smith has been a starter. Jamal Crawford can ball. Ryan Anderson comes off the bench for the hornets. Just because you don't start in the NBA doesn't mean you aren't good. All those guys play starter minutes and Harden did at OKC. It's about the system. And you don't want to have your best scorers on the bench at the same time, so you move one that comes off the bench.

I was actually referencing the NCAA players that got 6th man awards from their conference.
Dumb IMO.

Is it the 6th most important position?

Yea, your right. Amino is more important that Anderson for the hornets. Caron Butler is more important than Crawford for the clippers. James White is more important that JR Smith too.
At the end of the game, all those guys off the bench play more minutes than the guy starting.

If they are good enough of a player, they can earn, 1st, 2nd, 3rd team honors.
That's the point.
That's the point.

I don't know the origin of the award but I think one of the effects is to lessen the ego blow of a good player not starting. I'm sure coaches love the award.

The award is stupid when they keep giving it to guys who get starter minutes.
