LSU under Paul Mainieri has had more black players than most of our opponents. This just happens to be a year that we don't have any.

And also this

quote:

It's hard to have college players when so few are playing at the youth level.

Baseball isn't a sport that you can just pick up when you get to high school, and there just aren't many minorities playing organized baseball as kids.

How many whites are on the Southern basketball, baseball, and football teams?

It does praise Mainieri, however why does it even have to be an issue at all? If they were better than the white players and available then they would be here and play.

I rad most of it and I don't see a negative part to it. It simply says not many black people play baseball...

If it helps expose the ridiculous NCAA scholarship restrictions for baseball then I'm all for it!

Wow, y'all really need to read the article before berating it blindly. There are a few lines in there that come off as ill-advised, and the writers final conclusion was not consistent with the entire rest of the article, but overall it was some pretty decent info.

For everyone who didn't read it, but jumped right in to criticize, rest assured that this article is not attacking LSU directly. Pointing out a fact is not the same belittling. This article talked a lot more about the culture of college baseball that leads to very few black athletes, and did not come off as criticizing LSU (minus a small jab at the very end, which easily could have been applied to any other college).

Reactionary culture here is insane.

I would say that if more African-American youth embraced baseball, we would have many more on college rosters. I have heard it said by black kids, "baseball is a white sport". Many don't even give it a try.

I actually was thinking about this watching the USA play yesterday. Jimmy Rollins, Brandon Phillips, and Adam Jones all made it in baseball. I wish more youth in the African American community would give it a chance.

Exactly. As long as there is no "quota" or something attached to it.

But other than Mainieri's quote about the 11.7, he doesn't really talk about that.

Just looked up Geonte Jackson at San Jacinto CC and he's doing okay...

.316 BA, 2 doubles, .350ish OBP, 4 for 6 SB

Doesn't seem like he'd be a starter here, but I wish he would have stayed. I liked him over Yocum.

That's like saying if the Titanic had not hit that iceberg it would have had a perfect first voyage.

Do you think the article was critical of LSU or of Mainieri?

No, I just think this a stretch of a story.

And the article itself is an iceberg, to the point where Mainieri's quote gets lost in it.
