The government already pays for these sodas. Subsidizing Monsanto for the GE corn, then the framers who grow it. Then ADM.
So that after many years of drinking that sugar water and eating equally shitty solid foods, Medicare can pick up the tab for the accumulated diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and neurological problems that follow..........but hey, sundrop is totally worth it.

The answer to too much government is never more government.

I guess no regulation of one of the leading causes of chronic disease is the best approach in your mind. Kind of like how we treat narcotics, vehicles, cigarettes, alcohol, people with tuberculosis.......oh wait.

Why don't you ban every harmful thing known to humans? Why stop at soda?

You can buy a gallon of alcohol and a carton of cigarettes if you choose. You can drive as fast as you want, engage in extreme sports and do whatever unhealthy thing you choose.

Freedom is an awesome thing, you haven't learned to appreciate it just yet.

Most harmful things are regulated. That was the point of my post.

All of these are regulated. I appreciate you helping my argument.

Everything is regulated.

The only "argument" you made is that you can buy a gallon of vodka, but you don't want someone to have a supersized soda, yet somehow it;s all regulated. It makes no sense. Ban everything harmful?

I did not make this argument. You did. I said that it is regulated. You know like a legal age limit, limitations on places where you can purchase, possess, or imbibe it. It is regulated because there are problems that arise when people use it irresponsibly.

The same has become true with sugar (HFCS for the most part). The irony is that you are criticizing NY for initiating the ban when if you live in the south, your state suffers from the effects of sugar at a greater cost. The health problems that go along with excessive sugar consumption cost you and me money everyday. People die from it everyday.

This kind of regulation will pass out of necessity eventually. Just like public smoking bans, seatbelt laws, liability car insurance laws, etc.

All terrible laws.

Pretty much everything fun in the world poses some sort of health risk.

People die from it everyday.

Based on their decisions.

Sad that not minding your own business is a necessity.

Look, i don't like the way our government handles most things, but the way healthcare is set up I'd rather limitations be put on this stuff then to keep heading the direction we are going. Do you realize what effects soft drinks have on the economy? You guys bitch about regulations and laws, but benefit from some of them daily. Plus, you sound like a bunch of pansies bitching about not getting enough soda while you watch your duck dynasty reruns.

"A wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circlue of our felicities."

Keyword: otherwise.

Then there would be no government.

Ooo I love this game! Did you type that out while munching penis-flavored tofu and watching re-runs of Will & Grace?

This effected nobody on TD for the most part. I work in the city and since I am diabetic I can't drink sugary anything. Most New Yorkers thought the law silly but nobody really cared except those who profit off of it.

Well that's cool.

Freedom only applies if most people are bothered by infringement upon it and it doesn't apply at all if it's the freedom to profit.

Good fricking lord I really hate you totalitarian a-holes. How you do you not even fricking undersdtand how awful a human beings you are?

You seem to think "totalitarian" is a word that only exists if you oppress a majority or a select minority. God, you're idiots.

I am all for free markets but it is apparent that people can't control themselves. Then we become accountable for their health care expenses because of their health problems. In light of the decision I say just tax the F out of fast food and soft drinks.

Agree. While it seems unamerican to ban things like large sodas, do we really want to continue to foot the medical bills for folks who are fat and diabetic simply because they show no restraint?

So it's at the sole discretion of the individual what he or she wants to put in his or her body, and we support this right as Americans..

Except when it comes to drugs.

Hypocrites...

Do you realize the additional costs posed by easily circumvented regulations? How stupid does a fat person have to be to have his thirst for cola derailed by this law? The answer is very.

Also, you sound a bit disingenuous in bitching about Duck Dynasty watchers from your temple of intellectualism up in Northern Alabama.

It is. But do you really think most Americans are going to go to bat so one of America's more worthless demographics (drug users) can gain the freedom they desire?

No, tell us what it does to the economy.

While you're at it, tell us how the poor who continue to have baby after baby (on our dime) to collect tax credits and food stamps - what do they do to healthcare costs? Illegal aliens showing up at the hospital with no insurance plan but demanding healthcare for emergencies? Poor people who show up and need emergency treatment and then duck out on paying their bill? What do they do? And how does that effect you and me when we do things the right way with an insurance plan and paying our bills?

That's a whole lot more than just a fat person showing up with diabetes because he drinks too much coke...
