Senate deal struck on gun measure...

Is that not illegal already?
Posted on 3/4/13 at 8:52 pm to JAB528
Yep. But now they are writing a bill to enforce the law that has already been enacted. Still wont do anything because criminals dont give a shite about the law, thats why they are criminals. ATF helps provide weapons to a drug war in Mexico and gets a slap on the wrist. Citizen sells a gun to the wrong guy and they want to put him in jail for 25 years.

The Senate Judiciary Committee will take up the trafficking bill on Thursday, when it also plans to consider three other pieces of gun control legislation: an assault weapons ban, a school safety measure and a bill to require background checks for all gun buyers.
Bad
bad
bad
That is the start of a data base right there

frick that noise. I don't want the thumb of the government over me for every step I take.
EDIT: I also agree with JAB. It's astounding how ignorant people are on gun laws. They think, "Yea! That'll solve crime! Damn I feel good about this!" without even realizing straw purchases are already illegal. The same goes for people saying to ban "automatic machine guns." The ignorance is truly amazing.

Indeed it is. Too bad they don't actually enforce it. I'm sure making the same law over will be different this time though.

Yea it will! It'll be illegal squared! Or illegal times 2! That'll show the criminals!

Such a system would require an additional 100,000 jobs for federal employees to monitor the data base. Dems will call this an economic boost by creating jobs and be seen as saviors. All the while the same 100k jobs add 10 Billion cost per year to the non-existing Obama budget, better known as daily increasing federal debt that will never be expunged.
You gotta love

Yeah I was reading on this last night.
So in this hypothetical situation...is this bad for the me:
Say I buy a gun for a nephew for a Christmas/graduation gift (my HS grad gift was my 870 from mom/dad). 5 years later he commits some felony (not gun related). And his parole officer finds he has this gun...does that make me guilty of gifting him that gun 5 years earlier? How can they tell when he got the gun from me?

I think the term you're looking for is Super Illegal.

My bigger concern is the study out(article in USA Today) claiming gunshot healthcare-related costs topping 12 billion dollars, much of which is being paid out by Medicaid.
This is going to play right in to the hand of the CDC and the lifted restrictions on them researching gun violence as a public health issue. The way is being paved for significant gun and ammo taxes. They'll take the same path as they have with tobacco.

"Instead of a slap on the wrist or treating this like a paperwork violation, these crimes under our bill would be punishable by up to 25 years in prison," Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine said.
This is troubling for 2 reasons. I fully support prosecuting straw buyers which already has decent penalties but part of the issue is listed in the article.
quote:
are often not prosecuted under current law, usually because conducting such a sale yields such a weak penalty.
WTF does that mean? Do prosecurters look at penalties like an investment return? If it doesn't have a chance of yielding 25 yrs, do they just not think it worth their time?
The ATF site already outlined possible penalites at 10 yrs and a $25,000 fine.
Do Lie For the Other Guy
The other troubling fact is reclassification as gun trafficking.
There are laws on the books now that covers these activities. How about enforce them like the thousands of other unenforced laws stupid lawmakers pass.

Of course...Public prosecuter's are on a budget. So many man hours, so many crimes, would they rather spend their budget prosecuting murders and rapes or some gang banger that bought a sackful of Glock's for his buddies that's going to yield probation.
Been happening since day one.

It is my understanding that buying a gun for someone as a gift is a straw purchase. I have had 2 bought for me for various reasons(bday and graduation), so was that illegal?

No, assuming you can legally own a piece.

Can't say it much better than that.
