Cap update: ~$2m over, Will Smith update: still fat

So we were at $140m in mid January according to ESPN (most recent number I could find)
PFT thinks the cap could be just over $123m. So that's $17m over.
Thomas/Johnny Patrick saved us $3m, so that's $14m over.
Colston saved $3m, so that's $11m over.
Grubbs saved us $4m, so we're sitting right around $7m over the cap.
ETA: Evans saved $3m, so $4m now.
ETA2: Hawthorne converted his roster bonus into a signing bonus, saving $2m on the season.
ETA3: Bunkley restructure frees up $2.2m. I won't change the # in the title on account of Yasinska/Clayton figuring we're still about $3m over...
Cutting Will Smith would save us $8m on the season ($1m roster bonus + $9m base = $10m less the $2m accelerated roster bonus, which we could leave until next year should be choose to free up $10m). Cutting Vilma would free up just shy of $6m.
So without a Brees restructure (which will be inevitable within the next 2 offseasons), cutting Smith/Vilma and taking into account, say, $4m combined in draft pick and special teams/3rd string players, and $2m for DLP's 2nd round tender, we could very easily have $8m in legit FA spending money pretty soon.

It's not quite that simple. There are accelerators and things that increase the cap based on Top 51 salaries on the roster, etc.

More now with an Evans restructure. They probably will sign someone who will be a contributor, but I just want to be cautious as I don't want too spend too much on someone that's not worth the $$ and Jimmy still needing a contract soon

Evans, Grubbs,Hawthorne all restructure. Loomis is busy.

Aren't newly drafted players not factored into the cap for 2013 so that wouldn't matter? Could be wrong just what I thought.

Based on the numbers being rumored with all the restructures, I think we are under the cap (or extremely close). Biomass and Smith will give us some room for actual re-signings and FA.

I already took that into account. Vilma is on the last year of his deal so there's no acceleration, just $4.8m base, $1.1m roster bonus, so that's an easy one to figure out. I mentioned the choice of taking the $2m accelerated signing bonus hit this year or pushing into next (designating him as a post June 1st cut).

I'm aware, pretty sure ESPN takes that into account when they give the cap hit. Way too much work to figure out the exact cap hit of the top 51 alone, or even checking how many players are on the roster right now. I factored in a couple million for filler, so if anything there would be a bit more playing around money.

@LaSportsDude: @RoSpitta Alright, after finding everything I could it looks like the Saints are still $3.5 million over the cap.
Which isn't bad cause with Harper, Smith, and vilma we should be in good shape

They aren't considered part of the cap yet, if that's what you're asking. I was just considering their eventual cost once we draft them. If you're asking if rookie wages never count against the cap, they certainly do. Based on Bruce Irvin's contract (15th pick), our first rounder will cost just over $2m and the 3rd through 6th round picks will probably make it an even $3m or so since a few are guaranteed to not be among the aforementioned top 51 earners.
