We cut roman and will smith, then spend the money saved on guys to replace them?

Not sure that makes sense

I doubt we're cutting Roman. I think Smith and Vilma are real possibilities, but I'm not sure how much the staff were counting on them anyway.

wat

How does that not make sense if you get a younger, cheaper, and better option?

I never said that, Les.

I'm one of the few that thinks Roman will be in a better spot considering Ryan's scheme. He will be asked to play close to the line more, and that's his best attribute, playing more like a rover. Fine with him being here because of this, but his contract must be adjusted.

For Smith, his contract sucks balls. He obviously has to take way less. Still curious as to what exactly will happen with him.

But if neither are willing to take significantly less, along with Vilma, then adios.

Definitely see these 2 getting restructured.

How many defensive coordinators do we have to fire before we find one that makes Roman Harper look good?

He's played in 3 systems in his career and looked terrible in a ll 3, this will be his 4th. He needs to go.

He looked pretty good under Williams actually, the guy made the pro bowl.

When asked to cover, like he was with Spags, he will do pretty bad. But, as far as playing the run and being close to the line/blitzing, he is a very good safety. He will be asked to do a lot of this in this scheme, even more so than with Gregg.

He was bad under Gregg Williams too. Sharper and turnovers covered up a ton of garbage. The defense ranked at the bottom of the league the Superbowl season.

Sounds suspiciously like a linebacker. Unfortunately he's been our starting safety for 7 years.

True, but guys like Will Smith getting stonewalled when they rush the passer doesn't help out Harper's cause any either. I'm tired of seeing Smith get the bulk of the snaps up front.

He can still do a decent job stopping the run at times. He seemed to play well against Atlanta and Tampa Bay but other than that, he didn't do much. He might do better in this new 3-4 defense but I'd rather see somebody else win that job.

I think jenkins is the worse of the two, but harper needs to take a pay cut. he's obviously a big liability in this defense and he got rewarded with too big of a contract.

As far as I'm concerned

jordan-bunkley-hicks
(1st rounder)-lofton-hawthorne-tez/galette

make up a dependable front 7 imo. If we're what, 2m over the cap right now, cutting vilma/will smith gives us 14m to play with..man!

He was ballin' in 10' minus the playoffs, and then he got his big contract.

Yeah, it definitely doesn't help a bad secondary when your front 4 has been just a bad.

I honestly don't have a problem with Roman playing SS, but we damn sure paid him too much, and he has to be used right.

It is similar, it is basically a rover. Like I said, he is good when playing closer to the line. He did this very well in 09 (made the pro bowl), and in 2011 he led all of the NFL Safeties in sacks. He had 7.5 for the 2011 season, along with 2 forced fumbles. In 2010, the Saints defense was ranked in the top 5, believe it or not. He had 3 sacks and 6 forced fumbles that season.

I will not dispute the fact that he is awful in coverage, but he does do some things well, and Ryan's scheme works towards his strengths.

If he won't restructure, then I'd be fine with a cut.

I do because he's only good at half of his job.
