What do I need to fix an axle on a boat trailer?

I know for sure the axle is broke. Do I need new hubs, bearings, springs? It is a pretty old trailer for a 16ft flat. How much can I expect to pay?

Where is axle broken. If its in the middle and hubs are still good get it rewelded.
Or buy a new axle.

Post a picture of what you're talking about.

I tore up the spindles on a trailer once and talked to a guy about welding new ones on. He laughed... and pointed me in the right direction.
I got a single axle, with new springs, and hubs for about $150. Only took four bolts (grade 8 axle hangers) to replace.

Unless you do your own welding or have a friend do it for free. Ain't going to get it much cheaper than that.

I should have pictures Saturday

I'm thinking about just replacing the whole thing. Where did you get that package for $150?

Well, this was in about 2002 or so...
I would guess the set up today runs closer to $200. I haven't priced them lately.
The place was Tiger Axle in Shreveport, LA if you want to call and get a quote to compare to your local axle guy. Hell, I'm sure they'd ship you one....

Also, they beef your stuff up. Bigger bearings inside the standard 5 lug hub. As well as, the old axle had about 1.5 inch square tubing between the spindles and the replacement was 3 inch drill stem.

Well I work and live in Nola and go to school in BR so any location will do

Bent my old axle last summer. I went to Hurbs and bought a new one(much stronger) and it only cost me right at $200 for the whole kit. Took no time to take off and replace.

B&W trailers on airline in prairieville has parts.

on something as old as what you had a picture of yesterday. I would just swap out the whole axle for sure. Cheap insurance instead of sitting on the side of the road trying to repair it.

Probably more than you can find elsewhere but you can buy a new axle at tractor supply

Just call one of the local trailer builder places. Screw messing around with it and having to fix it later down the road. Just get a new one.
IIRC, mobile home axles are only like $500, so one for a little boat should be half of that

Oh yeah, I'm definitely getting a whole new set up instead of trying to fix the one that is already on there. Can I replace it with the boat on the trailer?
Posted on 2/27/13 at 2:40 pm to sloopy
Yea def depends on what actually is "broke". Ive bent axles and hubs and had them straigtened. Also got new axle and put my spindles back on. Any combination is possible to save money. I pull my axle and put it back on and let someone else do the work. Never spent over $150 and my stuff is 8 hole 7k lbs or 10 hold 10k lbs.
Short version, it shouldnt be much at all.

A couple of jacks and some blocks and you will be ready to go.

Yeah just get the jacks like you use on your car. I think mine took about an hour to do just because of space restrictions.
1.) Jack trailer up and use blocks to hold.
2.) Remove wheels
3.) Remove old axle
4.) Put new axle on
5.) Replace wheels
6.) Remove Blocks
7.) Lower trailer
8.) Go fishing
