I came across this gem for sale on EBay and thought it was very odd that Tom Osborne (Nebraska coaching legend and CURRENT AD!!) was basically lining up a "job" for a recruit and offered some help for his car repair...

Would this type of letter be allowed nowadays? Just curious...

Shouldn't this be investigated since he is still the AD at Nebraska? Is there a statue of limitations on infractions?

this is the type of stuff that caused the NCAA to create violations...this was the norm back then.

I had a friend who played football at an SEC school (not LSU). His summer job was to turn the sprinklers on at the practice field in the morning. That was it. Some other player got paid to come along later and turn them off.

Actually, I don't see anything wrong with that letter if it were sent today.

All of the players have the opportunity to have summer jobs, and finding an auto dealer to help him out doesn't mean he's being given special treatment.

Now, that being said, I had a high school teammate who played for Coach Osbourne, and while Osbourne was a standup guy, the program was not. This particular All Big-Eight player was 6 hours short of his special education degree, and his pro career didn't work out due to his habits, and Osbourne offered to fly him up and pay for his last six hours to get his degree.

Of course, we know how this story ends.

Probably not, I suspect that it would read "Happy Holidays", with no "Merry Christmas".

What's wrong with this? The player had used up his eligibility.

If a coach wants to get a former players school fees waived in order to get a degree, they should absolutely be able to.

Should have been sanctioned for not editing his letter before sending it.

Nothing is wrong with that.

I was using this as an example of why he's a stand up guy. I don't think CTO had any sort of systematic lack of control at Nebraska.

The program itself had boosters that were out of control. Osborne actually was honest with scouts about this particular player, and it hurt his draft status tremendously.

It's a cautionary tale.

All Big 8 for two years, 11th ranked LBer coming into the draft, and 50 something LBers were drafted, and he wasn't one of them.

Signed a free agent contract, but couldn't stay straight. The word on him was out before the draft. Player resented Osborne and staff for it, so he wouldn't accept their help afterward.

Last I heard about him is not worth mentioning.

Recruiting was different in those days. Here's a link to a story on how Lefty Driesell tried to recruit a number of high profile DC area hoops players (including James Brown) when he arrived at Maryland. Apparently, Lefty thought it was fair game, but the NCAA disagreed (mildly).
