re: What do liberals think when they watch Shark Tank?

quote:

Shouldn't there be some sort of social safety net so people know they won't be destitute and on the street if they fail.

If the people of a particular community want a safety net then they can set one up through charities and churches. It is not the govt's job to make this safety net. Also, how high and for how long will this safety net keep someone up? Again, the people of this one particular community make these decisions. America is a big, diverse nation and there are no one size fit all answers. That's the problem with the fed govt dictating things. They should let local govt and mentalities make these decisions. Then, as we see the different outcomes throughout the nation, we can adjust how we do things to improve our outcomes.

ill tell you what "we liberals" think . . . if people know there is a safety net to catch them if they fall, won't they be more willing to take a risk?
Yes and that would be a big problem.

When businessmen talk of risk, they understand success relates to risk mitigation. Probability of success relates inversely to risk. Rarely does a successful entrepreneur "hang it out there" in a high failure probability scenario. He expects success. He anticipates success. He plans for multiple contingencies to circumvent problems. He does everything he can to minimize existing risk because its consequences are so harsh.

That is as it should be. You should not have to pay for my risk. I should not have to pay for yours. Your model would encourage nitwits to hurry through risky business plans, fail, lose money, quit, restart a different plan, fail . . . repeat. Finally they might get lucky. If so, they'll likely make more money than they lost.

At that stage, do you get your money back?
No, you don't.

That is why your money and mine should only be involved if we choose to invest.

fricking hacks.

probably the most important thing successful people do. A well executed plan does not follow one path in a stepwise manner, but traverses a web of potential outcomes toward a predefined goal.

re: What do liberals think when they watch Shark Tank?

We also hear Mark Cuban say taxes on the wealthy should be raised.

That's fine if he believes that. But there's a difference between Mark Cuban wealthy and the many small business owners who are considered wealthy that gross about $1M in revenue a year and who's profits can vary wildly from year to year while also having to take on more and more increased tax burdens with the likes of Obamacare and what's left to pay themselves they get taxed on again.

Those incremental tax increases and business regulations are inhibiting that guy, not the Mark Cuban's of the world. Yet the onus is on him. He is considered wealthy by many. So I guess it depends on Cubans' definition of the word.

As to liberals' view of the Shark Tank, so far from them I see an agreement fully that capitalism is not limited to a few individuals, but is indeed open to all. So far all the liberals have answered in the affirmative for capitalism. I have to say that's encouraging at least. I don't think the true Marxist liberals have weighed in on the show yet, but some self-defined liberals have, and they are in agreement that capitalism is open to all individuals and can lead one from working class to wealthy.

We all have to start on some common ground to move forward. Maybe the appeal of a popular mainstream show is a start.

The question was sincere, despite my obvious bias. I find it ironic that a primetime show that depicts raw capitalism is popular at a time when it seems most of the country wants to move away from that concept or simply doesn't agree with it. Do those on the left watch it and cringe?

i think most posters here who are considered "liberal" are not true liberals. we're just not part of the rabid right so you guys think we're to the left of Mao. see your line about Marxist liberals as evidence of that

As a liberal, I feel my stomach twist everytime I flip through channels and I see this on. It is just a show of people whoring themselves to capitalist pigs just to make an extra buck. It is disgusting.

I love how people assume Liberals are against capitalism, just because we are for social welfare and social programs.

I don't assume this. 95% of people, both liberal and conservative support (maybe not verbally) a form of watered-down capitalism. They like the idea of capitalism but are not willing to give up their government handouts.

So . . .

. . . . . . to summarize your POV:

Liberals are moderate, intellectual, and well-reasoned. Nonliberals are rabid, right-wing nutjobs.

re: What do liberals think when they watch Shark Tank?

That's good. They certainly aren't on college campuses.

So the question then isn't whether capitalism is good or bad. We agree it is good. The question is then at what point does government begin to hinder capitalism? At what point does it prevent people from investing in ideas, executing those ideas into business form which then creates jobs for others and contributes to society as a whole? (And obviously the more people who have jobs the more they pay taxes into the system.)

My assumption is that the liberals who have answered so far appreciate that capitalistic aspects of the show (watching someone turn an idea into wealth), but believe that once they reach a certain defined "wealth" (whatever that may be defined as) that they aren't paying enough in taxes. And those same liberals believe that government should be bigger to better tend to those at the bottom rung.

So the only disagreement between liberals and conservatives (fiscally speaking) is in how much government hinders the inherently GOOD aspects of capitalism vs. how much government is NOT ENOUGH for those who don't make as much money.

That's good. We can move forward if this is the argument.

Ah ha. There's one.

So you don't feel good for the people who have great ideas (that make life easier for all) and turn them into millions they didn't have before?

I'm just trying to be empathetic to the other side.

It looks like we have Capitalist Liberals vs. Marxist Liberals.

Sarcasm. These "liberals" only exist in your head for the most part. Unless you hang out with a bunch of Bohemians from Brooklyn who are just as ignorant as Ray Beer-Belly from Jesse James trailer park.
